Tolfa combines a historic town setting with the landscapes of the Monti della Tolfa and a wealth of cultural and natural attractions. The Rocca offers views of the town and the surrounding hills; the museum, leatherworking and events add to the picture. If you are looking for a hotel in Tolfa, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your trip: sights, landscapes and views, or a specific event date.

Landscapes and views

The Monti della Tolfa stretch across about 17,000 hectares northwest of Rome, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the bend of the Mignone River. The landscape includes expansive pastures, Mediterranean maquis, and chestnut and beech forests. The Tolfa countryside is also home to wild orchids and rare and endangered birds of prey.

The Big Bench 291 offers far-reaching views: from there, the 360-degree panorama takes in the hills, the town of Tolfa and the Rocca. The path to the bench passes through the Macchiosi–Grasceta dei Cavallari area and is marked in rainbow colors. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

History, museum and craftsmanship

For centuries, the Rocca served as a defensive stronghold; today, it is a viewpoint overlooking Tolfa and the surrounding hills. The Palazzo Baronale, also known as the Palazzo della Ragione, is another notable historic building in town; it dates back to the 11th century. The apse of the Chiesa di S. Egidio was part of Tolfa’s medieval town walls.

The Museo Civico di Tolfa is housed in the Convent of the Padri Agostiniani, which dates back to the 16th century and is located near the Santuario di S. Maria della Sughera. The visitor route covers the Etruscan, Roman, medieval and modern periods. Exhibits include grave goods from the Pian della Conserva and Riserva del Ferrone necropolises. A visit to the museum thus combines an overview of different periods with specific finds from two named necropolises.

Guided tours also include visits to leather workshops, where local artisans make traditional saddles and bags in the Tolfetan tradition. They also include a walk through the historic center and a climb to the ruins of the Rocca dei Frangipane. Key stops on a guided route include the Etruscan-Roman temple of Grasceta dei cavallari and the ruins of the Abbazia di Piantangeli. Check tour booking information before your trip.
