Nazzano: Nature on the Tiber and History
Accommodation in Nazzano
Nazzano combines nature watching in the reserve with architectural and artistic history in the town. For planning your trip, these are two clearly distinct areas of interest: the Tiber and its waterbirds on the one hand, and historic buildings, churches and a museum on the other. An MTB tour adds an opportunity to explore mostly flat terrain.
Nature Watching and Outdoor Activity
The Nazzano Tevere-Farfa Regional Nature Reserve has observation huts along various trails. From there, you can watch the river without disturbing the waterbirds. This makes the huts a specific point of interest for anyone wishing to focus on the river and the birds found there. Nature watching is the focus here, without disturbing the wildlife being observed.
An MTB tour can start at the Nazzano parking area at the entrance to the reserve. It is mostly flat and does not include the climbs to the three villages. Trail conditions may vary and should be taken into account when planning.
Old Town, Castello and Churches
Nazzano’s historic center is laid out in a spiral, starting from the old fortress. Castello Savelli dates back to the 13th century and has two distinctive towers. A view of a bend in the Tiber can be enjoyed from the bridge leading to the main entrance of the Castello.
The Chiesa di Sant’Antimo stands on a hill and can be reached via a path with steps. Its three-aisled interior preserves Cosmatesque mosaics, a 10th-century pulpit and 15th-century frescoes attributed to Antoniazzo Romano. The architecture, mosaics and frescoes offer different ways to look at the church: the layout of the space, the craftsmanship of the mosaics and the dating of the wall paintings.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Consolatrice was consecrated in 1488 and dedicated to this invocation of the Virgin Mary. It also preserves a fragment of a fresco depicting the Virgin Mary and Child, attributed to the circle of Antoniazzo Romano. This attribution is an art-historical assessment, not confirmed authorship. The difference between this fragment and the frescoes in Sant’Antimo is a useful point of reference if you are interested in sacred art in Nazzano.
Museo del Fiume and San Francesco
The Museo del Fiume is in the historic town center, at the foot of the ancient Castello Savelli. It includes a natural history section and an archaeological section, a hall for temporary exhibitions and a multipurpose hall. The two sections have different thematic focuses; the other rooms complement them with space for temporary exhibitions and a range of uses.
The church and monastery of San Francesco are set in a centuries-old forest of holm oaks and oaks. The monastery’s history includes the first Franciscan settlement in Nazzano, which was established by Saint Anthony of Padua in 1299. The woodland setting and the monastery’s history are two distinct aspects of the site that you can explore separately, depending on your interests.
Local Tradition
During the patron saint’s feast on May 11, the Sant’Antimo banner is carried in a procession. If the date matters for your trip planning, check the feast details for the relevant year; they may vary.
