Nemi: Volcanic Lake, Forest and History
Accommodation in Nemi
Nemi brings together a distinctive landscape and places from different historical periods. The entire municipal area lies within the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani. Lago di Nemi, forest trails and viewpoints give the natural landscape its own character, while the museum, sanctuary and historic buildings tell the story of the town’s cultural heritage. When planning a stay, you can decide whether to focus mainly on the scenery, walks or historic sights.
Lago di Nemi and the landscape
Lago di Nemi is a small lake in the crater of an extinct volcano. Its slopes are densely forested. Above the lake, forest trails offer numerous panoramic views of the densely wooded waters. Walks are possible in Nemi, the surrounding area and the forests. Parco dei Castelli Romani is ideal for excursions, trekking and mountain biking—a different way to explore the landscape from walking along the trails above the lake.
Nature in Vallone Tempesta is also diverse: numerous amphibians and insects typical of wetlands live near the spring. These include dragonflies, true bugs, mosquitoes and butterflies. This variety of species is as much a part of the area’s natural character as the volcanic lake and its wooded slopes.
Museum, sanctuary and architectural history
The Museo delle Navi Romane opened in 1939 and was designed by Vittorio Morpurgo. It displays surviving remains of the Roman ships, as well as finds from the Castelli Romani area and the nearby Santuario di Diana Nemorense. The museum was also the first example of a museum structure designed specifically for its contents. Its architectural history and collection thus offer two different ways to explore the area’s Roman past.
The monumental complex of the Santuario di Diana Nemorense was laid out on three terraces. In archaic times, its grounds became the federal center of the Latin cities, which gathered at the Lucus Ferentinae, also known as Bosco Ferentino. This meeting place was on Monte Savello near Albano Laziale. The sanctuary’s history thus connects the complex’s architecture with the political significance of the site during that period.
The parish church of Santa Maria del Pozzo also has a layered architectural history. It was built in the early 17th century at the request of Mario and Pompeo Frangipane to replace an earlier church. That church had been built in the 12th century by Cistercian monks within the walls of the fortified castle and dedicated to Santa Maria de Puteo.
The history of Palazzo Ruspoli begins in the 9th or 10th century with a tower later known as the Saracen Tower. The medieval castle core developed around it in the 12th century. The sequence—from the early tower to its later name and then to the castle core—is a useful key to understanding the building’s history.
Views and special places
Belvedere Ceyrat is at the highest point in Nemi. From there, the view stretches across the town’s rooftops, the volcanic lake and the sea. Terrazza degli Innamorati has a more mythological connection: it was inaugurated on February 14, 2015, and named after the love stories of Diana and Virbius, and Numa Pompilius and the nymph Egeria.
At La mano dei desideri, visitors can place their face against the second hand, which is tattooed with ornamental designs, to make a wish. The site offers a small interactive experience, while Terrazza degli Innamorati evokes mythological tales through its name. Both complement the viewpoints and historic buildings with different reasons to visit.
