Montelanico lies in the green valleys of the Monti Lepini, surrounded by centuries-old chestnut and beech forests. Springs, hikes, religious buildings and medieval landmarks give a trip here a variety of themes. If you are planning a stay, you can choose between nature trails, local history and individual works of art.

Spring Trails and Hikes

The Anello delle Fonti is an 8-kilometre circular trail starting at the Fontana Nuova and linking five springs. It can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. The Parquaria spring is the final stop on the route. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

Other hikes offer different highlights: trails from Montelanico lead to Monte Lupone. A hike from Montelanico reaches the Chapel of Madonna di Collemezzo through oak and holm oak forests. In the wider regional setting of the Monti Lepini, the Le vie dell’acqua excursion route links Carpineto Romano, Montelanico and Gorga. The route can be travelled by car, on foot or by bicycle. This gives you a choice of a loop trail linking five springs, hiking destinations and a route connecting three towns.

Castles, Religious Buildings and Art

Castello di Montelanico is believed to have been built around the year 1000. The first records of it appear in a papal bull issued by Anastasius IV in 1154. The two dates distinguish an approximate construction date from the first written mention. Remains of a defensive wall, towers and portals with round and pointed arches have survived in Montelanico. The Santuario Madonna del Soccorso preserves a 15th-century fresco of the Madonna.

Another castle site is Castello di Pruni: its ruins stand on a hill beside the SR Carpinetana. This important medieval castle was abandoned in the 15th century. After leaving the paved road, you can reach the ruins of Castello di Collemezzo on an approximately one-hour walk along the Fossato Ballerino. The Church of Santa Maria di Collemezzo is also located near the ruins.

The Jo Rifugio on Via Colle Sasso houses a permanent exhibition of historical memorabilia from the Second World War. Check access arrangements before visiting. On the main square, the Fontana dei Putti is a work by the artist Ernesto Biondi—an individual work of art distinct from the fortifications and religious buildings.

Other Places and Events

The Panchina della Pace is located in Le Cime, on the Collemezzo plateau. It was inaugurated in 2023 and is described as the first Big Bench in the Monti Lepini. If local facilities are important to your plans, check their availability before travelling. The Ara della Pace area is also home to the small astronomical observatory “La Via delle Stelle,” which is dedicated to observing the sky and sharing astronomical knowledge. Find out about visiting options in advance.

Puzzo Ciccone is a well filled by rainwater and is essential to shepherds and transhumance. A regular event in the annual calendar is the Sagra della Castagna, celebrated in Montelanico since 1963 on the third Sunday in October. The Il Riccio d’Oro art competition is also held each year during the festival. Check the programme for the relevant year before your trip.
