Discover Gallicano Nel Lazio
Accommodation in Gallicano Nel Lazio
Gallicano Nel Lazio lies on a tuff terrace at the foot of the Monti Prenestini, between the gorges of two streams crossed by the arches of the Acquedotto Claudio. Tuff, deeply cut valleys and ancient waterworks together shape the character of the town. This offers a combination of landscape and Roman engineering history to help you plan your trip.
Roman Aqueducts and Tuff Gorges
Gallicano Nel Lazio is part of a route exploring the Roman aqueducts Anio Vetus, Anio Novus, Aqua Marcia and Aqua Claudia. The route passes through gorges cut into the tuff and alongside monumental Roman bridges. Visitors interested in ancient infrastructure can explore the structures and the terrain together: the aqueducts are just as much a part of the story as the landscape through which the route passes.
Ponte Amato and the Ancient Via Prenestina
Ponte Amato was built in the 1st century BC for the ancient Via Prenestina. It is located to the right of the modern S.P. Prenestina, between the Tagliata di Cavamonte and the town of Gallicano Nel Lazio. This makes it possible to distinguish its ancient function from its modern road setting.
The Ponte Amato Archaeological Park and the ancient Via Prenestina include a visitor trail through the Tagliata di Santa Maria di Cavamonte, along the ancient Prenestina and through other important archaeological sites in the area. The bridge, road and Tagliata are thus part of a shared archaeological context.
Church History and Religious Tradition
The present-day Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo was rebuilt at the expense of Vittoria Altieri Pallavicini and completed at the end of April 1734. The highly venerated image of the Madonna delle Grazie is also kept in the church. It is said to have come from Constantinople and has been in Gallicano Nel Lazio since the 11th century. The timelines are clearly distinct: the present church was completed in the 18th century, while the tradition surrounding the image dates back further. This brings local history together with religious tradition.
The Corpus Christi Infiorata
The annual Infiorata di Gallicano nel Lazio, held on Corpus Christi, is created by catechists, associations, academies and artists, together with drawings by students in the second-year classes of the Istituto Comprensivo di Gallicano nel Lazio. The Infiorata extends for 300 metres over an area of 500 m². Its route runs from Piazza Sant’Andrea in front of the church, along Via Maestra, Piazza della Rocca and Via Roma, to the Chiesa di San Rocco.
The display is made using entirely recycled and recyclable materials, including marble powder, wood derivatives and coffee grounds. The tradition is defined both by its set route and by the materials used.
Castle, Lanes and Local Produce
The Castello di Passerano is noted for its corner towers and fortified entrance dating from the 10th century. The street layout also offers a tangible connection to the town: picturesque comb-like lanes branch off along the main street, which is bounded by Porta Maggiore and Porta San Salvatore.
Local produce from Gallicano Nel Lazio includes fettuccine with mushrooms. Alongside the archaeological and religious themes, this adds a culinary touch and a regional flavour to the character of the town.
