When planning a stay in Rocca Sinibalda, there are several options to focus on: the architecture of the castle, museums and collections, and trails through the landscape. You can decide which will shape your trip based on your interests in history, nature or traditions. When looking for a hotel, it is also helpful to first consider whether a castle tour, a hike or a culinary event will be the main focus.

Castle, Art and History

During the Renaissance, Baldassarre Peruzzi gave the Castello di Rocca Sinibalda its present form as a mighty military fortress and a bright aristocratic palace. The complex includes a forward defensive spur, a defensive section known as the “Tail,” and a central palace structure on a rocky ridge. Fortress and aristocratic palace describe two aspects of the building, while the defensive spur, “Tail” and palace structure describe its specific architectural layout.

A guided tour takes you through the Corte Grande, numerous rooms on the Piano Nobile, the elevated defensive walkways, underground areas and the gardens. The tour therefore includes reception rooms, defensive areas and gardens. Booking arrangements may change, so check them before your visit.

Rocca Sinibalda is home to the permanent retrospective exhibition of the Museo Agapito Miniucchi. Miniucchi’s works use natural materials such as wood, stone and iron. Vallecupola is also home to the Biblioteca Casa Museo Angelo Di Mario. Its collection includes catalogues on Etruscology and ancient languages, as well as the poetic and sculptural works of Angelo Di Mario.

The town’s history can also be explored through its various cultural sites. The Museo diffuso delle Tradizioni contadine e artigiane in Posticciola uses tools and equipment to tell the story of the people of the Turano Valley. In the historic centre, the former monastery building provides direct access to the historic viewpoint of Hortus de Sinibaldi. The parish church of Santi Agapito e Giustino houses a valuable 17th-century painting.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The area around Rocca Sinibalda is part of the Monte Navegna e Monte Cervia Regional Nature Reserve. Numerous nature trails connect localities along the Turano River. This offers a choice of both routes along the river and longer trails through the reserve; they should not be considered a single loop trail.

A hike of around two hours leads from Rocca Sinibalda to the summit of Monte Pelato, at an altitude of 1,050 metres. The approximate duration gives you a guide for planning your hike; check local trail conditions in advance. In the hamlet of Vallecupola, the Sentiero Italia passes through the Rocca Sinibalda area within the reserve.

Another option is the Rieti–Rocca Sinibalda stage of the Cammino di San Benedetto. It follows both unpaved and paved paths. You can therefore choose between a hike with an approximate duration provided and a pilgrimage stage with different types of surfaces. If you are interested in canyoning, the spring-fed Gola del Fosso Marangone lies between Longone Sabino and Rocca Sinibalda and is suitable for this activity. Check local conditions and access in advance.

Traditions and Culinary Events

The Sagra dei Vertuti takes place on May 1 in honour of a traditional spring dish. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the local programme announcement for the relevant year. In October, the chestnut takes centre stage at Rocca Sinibalda’s Sagra dei Frascarelli e Castagne. These two dates offer different seasonal opportunities to plan your trip around.

Rocca Sinibalda also lies on the Strada del Tartufo e della Castagna della Valle del Turano. The route’s name puts truffles and chestnuts in the spotlight; together with the festivals mentioned above, it is one of the specific features that shape the area’s culinary character. When planning, you can choose between architecture, hiking trails and a seasonal focus, rather than trying to fit all these themes into the same trip.
