Antrodoco between history and regional culture
Accommodation in Antrodoco
When choosing a destination, Antrodoco offers several specific points of interest: sacred architectural heritage, art collections, a street-art project and a variety of routes. There are also festivals featuring music, processions and regional produce. If you are looking for a hotel in Antrodoco, you can plan your stay around your interests—such as historic buildings, a stage of the Cammino Naturale dei Parchi, mountain biking or local festivals.
Sacred architecture and museums
The Santuario della Madonna delle Grotte is located at the Gole di Antrodoco. Its history begins with the shepherdess Berardina Boccacci, who discovered a sacred image of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus near a small grotto in 1601. The Santuario was built at this site between 1603 and 1604. Its crypt holds the remains of French soldiers who died following the peasant uprisings of 1799 in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
Separate from the church building, the Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista dates back to the 9th century and has a hexagonal shape. It also served as a sundial: on June 21, at 5:30 p.m., a ray of sunlight entered through a small window, announcing the summer solstice. Santa Maria Extra Moenia offers another link to the past: the church was built in the early Middle Ages over the remains of a pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Diana.
The Museo Lin Delija–Carlo Cesi is housed in the former Convent of Santa Chiara on Via Roma, in the heart of Antrodoco. All the works preserved there are by Lin Delija. This makes the collection quite different from that of the Museo Storico Militare, which displays more than 300 headdresses and mementos from the world and colonial wars, including weapons, uniforms, bomb fragments and a fully furnished typical base camp.
Art, events and routes
The cultural project “R/Esistenza,” launched in 2021, transformed Antrodoco into an open-air urban gallery for street art. The artists whose works are part of the project include STEN&LEX, Lucamaleonte and NEVE. The Castaldato di Antrodoco, by contrast, focuses on the town’s medieval past between 1228 and 1371. Its program includes the Corteo delle Dame, the Banchetto dei Rioni, the Notte dei Tamburi, the Corteo Storico and the Palio Madonna del Popolo; event dates may vary.
When planning a route, it is useful to distinguish between the two routes mentioned here. The 17th stage of the Cammino Naturale dei Parchi starts in Antrodoco, follows the Salaria 150 trail marked by the CAI and runs through the Velino River valley along the old Via Salaria. The MTB route SI-C O12-A is different: it starts in the historic center and leads to the Rifugio CAI Sebastiani. No information is provided here about walking or cycling times or difficulty levels.
The Gole del Velino are designated as a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation (SPA/SAC). This offers different options for nature and cultural interests to consider when choosing your travel dates and activities.
Regional specialties and festivals
Stracci Antrodocani are very thin, elastic egg pancakes made with egg, water and flour, then baked in the oven. Their filling consists of tomatoes, ground veal, mozzarella, butter, beef sauce and grated Parmesan. The Sagra degli Stracci Antrodocani celebrates this traditional specialty and takes place in the first few days of August; the exact festival dates may vary.
The Festa di Sant'Anna is celebrated on July 26 in honor of Antrodoco’s patron saint. It includes a solemn procession, as well as performances by bands and singers. The festival also features a Mass and a market display of local pecorino cheese and wines in the historic center. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific dates for your travel year.
The Festa d’Autunno lasts three days and takes place between late October and early November. It focuses on local culinary specialties such as mushrooms, chestnuts and cheese, accompanied by regional wines. The exact dates may vary. Along with the summer festivals and the Sagra, it offers a seasonal point of reference for planning a trip, without assuming any particular event program.
