Rieti offers concrete points of reference for a trip focused on medieval architecture, the Cammino di Francesco or water sports on the Velino. Churches, towers and city walls reveal different aspects of the city’s history. The places and activities below can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Churches and historic buildings

The exhibition rooms of the Museo Civico are located in the Palazzo Comunale. This places the museum at a specific site in Rieti and complements the religious buildings with a distinct cultural point of reference. The Pontifical Organ Dom Bedos-Roubo is located in the church of San Domenico.

Rieti Cathedral was completed and opened for worship in 1225. Its bell tower dates from the 13th century and is 37.20 metres high. The church therefore offers both a precise historical date and a specific measurement for its tower.

The church of Sant’Agostino dates from the mid-13th century. Its bell tower dates from the 14th century and has four bells. This provides different features for comparing the towers: the cathedral’s century and height, and Sant’Agostino’s century and number of bells.

City walls and Porta Romana

Rieti’s medieval walls date from the 13th century, are still widely visible today and are considered an important city landmark. They provide another point of reference for the city’s history, alongside its churches and towers.

Porta Romana was the southern gate at the Roman access viaduct to Rieti. Here, the city’s history can be explored through a single gate, its southern location and its role at the entrance to Rieti. Together, the walls and the gate reveal different aspects of the historic city.

Hiking and water sports

The central circular route of the Cammino di Francesco is 56 kilometres long and can be hiked in five days. The route leads to medieval Rieti. Its length and possible hiking duration give you a concrete idea of what to expect when planning; also check the route conditions before setting out.

Rafting is possible at some locations along the Velino River in Rieti; the exact location may vary. The Velino is also considered suitable for trying kayaking on moving water for the first time. If water sports are your main focus, you can choose between these two options without assuming a particular route or starting point.
