Terracina: Ancient Monuments and Karst Landscape
Accommodation in Terracina
For your stay in Terracina, you can focus on different things: ancient architecture, a town museum, a local tradition and the karst landscape of Campo Soriano. Each place and topic offers its own perspective on the area’s history and landscape.
Campo Soriano and the Karst Landscape
Campo Soriano is designated a natural monument. The area lies within the municipalities of Terracina and Sonnino in the Province of Latina and is now part of the Monti Ausoni e Lago di Fondi Regional Nature Park. The karst plateau is characterized by limestone monoliths and tall rock pinnacles. Typical karst features also include sinkholes, karren fields and swallow holes.
Tempio di Giove Anxur and Ancient Architecture
The Tempio di Giove Anxur sanctuary is located on Monte Sant’Angelo. It was built during the Republican period, between the mid-2nd and mid-1st centuries BC. On the lower terrace is a well-preserved cryptoporticus running along three sides. Its barrel vault is made of opus incertum; the alternating arches create the impression of a long corridor overlooking the sea. The terrace setting, the vault construction and the view are among the specific features of this archaeological structure.
The forum is also a point of reference in Terracina’s ancient architectural history. The Teatro Romano was identified as a theater connected to the ancient forum opposite it. Terracina’s co-cathedral was built between the 5th and 6th centuries using the remains of a Roman temple in the city forum that had five aisles. Together with the sanctuary on Monte Sant’Angelo, these structures represent different periods, from the Republican temple complex to the later reuse of Roman remains.
Museum and Finds from the Area
The Museo civico “Pio Capponi” occupies the first level of the Torre Frumentaria, a 13th-century building. The tower stands opposite the monumental area of the Foro Emiliano in Terracina’s upper historic center. The museum was founded in 1894 to organize finds from the Terracina area and materials unearthed during the excavation at the sanctuary on Monte Sant’Angelo at that time. The city’s history and the archaeological work at the sanctuary are therefore both among the museum’s themes. The connection to the excavation also explains why the museum brings together finds from the wider area and material from Monte Sant’Angelo.
Wine Designation and Festival Tradition
The controlled designation of origin “Terracina,” also known as “Moscato di Terracina,” covers dry, medium-sweet, passito and sparkling wines. The grape-growing area extends across the entire municipal territories of Monte San Biagio, Terracina and Sonnino in the Province of Latina. The DOC thus links a clearly defined wine-growing area with several different wine styles.
The Festa della Madonna del Carmine, also known as the Festa del Mare, is part of Terracina’s folklore and a recurring tradition. It takes place on the Sunday after July 16; details of the annual program may vary. If the festival is important to your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.
Routes and Planning
One suggested route leads from Terracina’s historic center to the archaeological site of the Tempio di Giove Anxur; the stated duration is about one and a half hours. This is an estimate, and route conditions may change. Check current conditions before setting out. This is separate from the many trails marked by the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) in the area of the Monti Ausoni e Lago di Fondi Regional Nature Park that includes Terracina. KML maps are available to download for these trails. For planning purposes, these are two different types of information: an approximate duration for one suggested route and maps for numerous marked trails.
Whether you are most interested in ancient architectural history, the karst features of Campo Soriano or the “Moscato di Terracina” DOC, you can give these topics different priorities when planning your stay. This lets you shape your trip around the specific places, structures and traditions you would like to learn more about.
