Sezze lies on a hill on the edge of the Pontine Plain and on a spur of the Monti Lepini. Its historic center, shaped by the Middle Ages, sacred art, a Passion play and traces of Roman times offer the city several cultural points of interest.

Medieval center and sacred art

In Sezze’s central historic district, remains of walls have been preserved, including megalithic walls. The historic fabric also includes the remains of towers and a castle, as well as numerous old buildings. These different elements give the town center its medieval character; the wall remains are just one part of its surviving built heritage.

The Museo diocesano d’arte sacra di Sezze is housed in the rooms of the Palazzo dei canonici of the Cathedral of S. Maria. Its collections include ecclesiastical furnishings and paintings, spanning the 15th century to the present day. The collection is spread across five rooms. With its sacred objects and paintings from a long period, the museum offers a cultural and historical point of interest.

The Ex Monastero delle Clarisse is also connected with the history of Sezze. It is a historic residence in Lazio; San Carlo da Sezze is associated with the site, where he fell into ecstasy while praying. Access to the monastery is not permitted. If you are considering viewing it from the outside, check this with local staff in advance.

Passion play and activities

The Sacra Rappresentazione della Passione di Cristo in Sezze has medieval origins and was celebrated by local religious confraternities. In the 17th century, San Carlo da Sezze revived the tradition; from 1933, the Associazione della Passione di Cristo gave it a new form. Its history therefore includes both the early religious tradition and later stages in its development.

The annual performance is associated with Good Friday. It features 40 moving tableaux vivants and more than 500 local participants in historical costumes. The performance attracts visitors from across the region and beyond. If you are planning your trip around the event, check the specific date of the next edition separately.

Another possible activity is “Itineraringioco” by the Museo del Giocattolo. The museum may organize it in the streets and squares of Sezze; it consists of treasure hunts or street games. Check availability in advance if you would like to include this activity in your plans.

Roman traces and landscape

The Archi di San Lidano near Sezze Scalo are the remains of a large Roman bridge. They stand alone on the plain of the Pontine landscape. Their historical significance is quite distinct from that of the walls, towers and buildings in the medieval center: here, the focus is on a Roman structure.

A different point of interest is the natural monument “Superfici calcaree con impronte di dinosauri presso il sito denominato ex Cava Petrianni.” It is located in the municipality of Sezze, in the Province of Latina, and covers about 32 hectares. It is known for dinosaur footprints in the limestone. The Archi di San Lidano point to Roman building history, while the limestone footprints are the central feature of the natural monument.
