Aprilia: Churches, Squares and Cultural History
Accommodation in Aprilia
Aprilia’s cultural history is reflected in its churches, squares and works of art, as well as in the city’s event traditions. These different points of interest can help you plan your stay around history, public art or cultural events.
Churches and Squares in Aprilia
The central church of San Michele Arcangelo and Santa Maria Goretti was one of the few buildings already in existence when Aprilia was inaugurated on 29 October 1937. It was destroyed by bombing during the Second World War and rebuilt in the postwar period. Its history therefore spans the city’s beginnings and its postwar reconstruction. The church can be reached from Piazza Roma and Via dei Lauri.
Piazza delle Erbe was inaugurated on 25 April 2021. Accessible from Piazza Roma, Via Rossetti and Via dei Garofani, it was created as a space for cultural activities and events in the founding towns. The Mercatino delle Erbe is located on the site of the former Piazza delle Erbe in the founding town of Aprilia. The original market was laid out like a cloister: a portico covered by cross vaults and supported by pillars surrounded a square courtyard. At its center stood a round travertine fountain. The description of the former site adds a distinct architectural dimension to the present-day market context, although the two squares cannot be considered to share the same design.
The renovated Mercatino delle Erbe is intended to accommodate food service and cultural activities, in addition to the sale of products. These planned uses bring together different aspects of the square: the market, food and culture. When planning your visit, it is useful to distinguish between the former cloister-like structure and the intended uses of the renovated market.
Public Art and Historic Sites
The sculpture “Evoluzione” stands on the fountain in Piazza Roma, where it was installed on 29 October 1997. It was Umberto Mastroianni’s last work before his death on 25 February 1998. Its location and the artist’s biography give the work a specific connection to the city’s history: the sculpture is both a work in a public space and a notable point in the artist’s career.
Another historic point of interest is the Carano Garibaldi estate. The Garibaldi family mausoleum is located there; among those buried there is Menotti, Giuseppe Garibaldi’s eldest son. The estate also includes a historic cemetery dating from the Napoleonic era. Family history and the Napoleonic period thus represent two distinct historical connections at the same site.
Festivals, Art and Wine
The Feast of San Michele Arcangelo takes place on 29 September and includes musical, cultural and religious events. It traditionally ends with a fireworks display. The Festa dell’Uva e del Vino follows in late October; the Aprilia Film Festival takes place in October and brings together music, dance, painting, photography, crafts and poetry. The range of events therefore extends from religious and cultural festivities to a festival featuring several art forms.
Wine is also part of the local culture: Aprilia DOC includes white, red and rosé wines, as well as Merlot. The Festa del Vino is presented as a food and wine event centered on grapes and wine. Together, these details give an impression of the different ways wine is celebrated in Aprilia.
