Sabaudia can be explored through several distinct themes: the coast and Lago di Paola, the nature of Parco Nazionale del Circeo, and the town’s history and culture. If you are looking for a hotel in Sabaudia, this variety can help you narrow down the focus of your trip. The places and features below range from a wetland designated as internationally important to archives, museums and buildings.

Coast, Lake and Wetland

Lago di Paola is part of a coastal lake and wetland complex designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The lake is 6.7 kilometres long and separated from the Tyrrhenian Sea by a sand dune about 200 metres wide. This combination of lake, wetland and coastal dune shapes the landscape in different ways, without making the lake and sea the same body of water.

The coastline offers a landmark of its own: Mare di Sabaudia is known for 15 kilometres of fine sand, and the beaches are bordered by a coastal dune approximately 200 metres wide. Extensive production of clams, known as “vongola verace”, also takes place on the shores of Lago di Paola. If coast and waterscapes are your main interests when planning your trip, you can distinguish between these different aspects of Sabaudia: the seaside beaches, the long lake and the wetland.

Nature and Orientation in the National Park

The main visitor centre for Parco Nazionale del Circeo is in the built-up area of Sabaudia. The Sentiero Natura is also located at the Centro Visitatori. Marked rest areas and explanatory panels introduce key features of the forest’s wildlife and vegetation. Reconstructions of a “Lestra” and a charcoal kiln also illustrate the historical relationship between people and the area within the park. Nature and landscape history are therefore both among the topics presented here.

The Museo Naturalistico del Parco Nazionale del Circeo offers a different perspective. Covering approximately 350 square metres, it provides an overview of the protected area’s ecological and historical value. This highlights a difference that may help you choose what interests you: the Sentiero Natura focuses on the forest, wildlife, vegetation and historical forms of land use; the museum gives an overview of the park’s ecological and historical value.

The Centro di Documentazione sull'Istruzione e la Sanità nelle paludi pontine can be reached on foot or by bicycle along a forest path. Information panels along the way explore the relationship between people and the environment from prehistoric times to the present day. The documentation centre itself preserves records of efforts to provide the people of the Pontine Plain with medical assistance and education. Together, the path and the exhibition topic connect a broad history of the environment with specific questions of health and education.

Architecture, Museums and History

Sabaudia’s urban design is also part of its character: the town retains its original urban and architectural layout and is known as the “Città del Razionalismo”. The Centro di Documentazione “Angiolo Mazzoni” offers a link to this architectural history. It is housed in the former post office, designed by architect and engineer Angiolo Mazzoni. The centre brings together a historical, project-related and photographic archive with the “Feliciano Iannella” municipal library; together, they document the history of Sabaudia and its surrounding area.

The Museo Civico del Mare e della Costa “Marcello Zei” offers a different focus. It presents traces of prehistoric people who lived along the coast and features an interactive route with hands-on observation activities, small discovery tasks and challenges. Those interested in early settlement and the coast will find a different format here from the archives and library.

On the eastern shore of Lago di Sabaudia, within Parco Nazionale del Circeo, lies the Parco archeologico della Villa di Domiziano. The complex comprises three visible, well-preserved areas. The Santuario di Santa Maria della Sorresca, on the shores of Lago di Paola, offers another historical dimension; it dates back to before the 10th century. The “Cappella reale” is located in the church of Santissima Annunziata: Queen Margherita di Savoia donated it to the town in the 1930s; it was originally located in Palazzo Margherita in Rome.
