Pastena can be explored through three themes: the Grotte di Pastena, with its active and fossil cave sections; the historic center, with its cobbled lanes and stone houses; and the Cherry Festival. When planning your trip, it helps to keep these highlights separate: access to the caves is by guided tour, the festival takes place on a date in June, while cave exploration and rural life offer further insights into the town’s history.

The Grotte di Pastena: Cave Chambers and Water

The Grotte di Pastena is located in the Monti Ausoni e Lago di Fondi Regional Nature Park. It comprises a lower, active cave section and an upper, fossil section. Its chambers feature stalactites, stalagmites and columns, as well as lakes and seasonal waterfalls. The cave dates back to the Mesozoic Era: the continual erosion caused by water formed it around 80 to 50 million years ago.

The Sala del Lago blu is an example of the different forms water takes here. A waterfall about 10 meters high plunges into a small lake that is 5 meters deep. The waterfall depends on rainfall; the lake is fed by the Fosso Mastro and by small springs on the lakebed. These measurements describe different aspects of the chamber: the approximate height of the waterfall and the depth of the lake.

Guided Tours and the Speleological Route

The Grotte can only be visited on a guided tour. Groups are limited to 12 people; when there are several family groups or people who are not subject to distancing rules, groups of up to 20 people are possible. Check the practical information before you travel, as operational details may change.

The active section of the speleological route is a specialist activity, not the standard route for tourist visits. It is 2,200 meters long and follows the stream underground: in the Pastena area, it enters the cave as the Fosso Mastro, and in the Falvaterra area, it emerges as the Rio Obaco. Along the way, the stream is fed by numerous underground springs that flow year-round.

Townscape and History

The Grotte di Pastena was explored in 1926 by Baron Carlo Franchetti and other cave explorers; the site was opened to tourists as early as 1927. Narrow cobbled lanes and stone houses define the townscape of the historic center. It retains the traditional atmosphere and authenticity of an old village.

The Museo dell’Arte Contadina e dell’Ulivo has 13 rooms showcasing aspects of rural life in the area. These include a room dedicated to olive oil production, a crafts room, a bedroom and a room for processing grain. The museum and historic center offer different perspectives: the museum focuses on specific aspects of rural life, while the historic center is defined by its lanes and stone houses.

Getting There and Dates

From the “Ceprano” exit of the A1 Autostrada del Sole Rome–Naples, the route follows Via Ristretto southeast to the SP151 toward Pastena. This stretch is 6 kilometers long. Check the road route before setting out.

The Cherry Festival takes place on the first Sunday in June and was founded in 1936. The festival features floats created by Pastena’s districts. Check the date and current program before planning your trip around it. Two different factors can help with choosing when to visit: the festival’s June date and the seasonal, rainfall-dependent flow of the cave waterfalls.
