Frosinone brings together Roman traces, churches, viewpoints, and cultural traditions. When planning your stay, you can focus on different themes: archaeology, architectural details, green spaces, or events.

Roman Traces and Historical Interpretations

The Roman amphitheatre of Frosinone was built between the end of the 1st century and the beginning of the 2nd century AD. The visible remains include supporting chambers made of opus caementicium on the southwest side of the cavea. Today’s Piazza Garibaldi has, with some probability, been identified as the ancient forum of Frùsino—an archaeological interpretation that is explicitly not presented as a certain identification.

Another striking architectural detail is the campanile: the Romanesque tower has a square floor plan, three rows of biforate windows on all four sides, a clock, and a height of 40 metres. Furnishings from the Reggia di Caserta are kept in the Palazzo del Governo. These different points of interest each provide a distinct architectural connection to the city’s history.

Churches, Views, and Stories Passed Down

The Chiesa di San Benedetto is one of the few churches in Frosinone to have survived the bombings of the Second World War. The exterior of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta is inspired by the Basilica di Sant’Andrea della Valle in Rome. Those interested in places shaped by religion will find in Frosinone both a legacy of wartime and an architectural connection to a building in Rome.

Piazza Vittorio Veneto is a viewpoint overlooking the Sacco plain and the Ciociaria region. Another kind of story is associated with a religious site: the Santuario della Madonna della Neve commemorates a miracle said to have occurred in 1685, when the face of the Madonna on an image reportedly began to perspire white drops. Presenting it as a story passed down preserves the nature of this account.

Green Spaces and Paths

The historic footpath in Parco San Francesco was renovated as part of the 2026 restoration and inauguration project. It connects Viale Mazzini directly and safely with the historic centre. The park also has a children’s play area. Villa Comunale features a public park with an area equipped for sports and fitness activities, as well as a playground with recreational, health, cultural, environmental, and nature-related functions.

The Sentiero dei Funari runs through Parco delle Colline. In the past, rope-makers used this path to reach the area where ropes were made. The route therefore connects its course through the park with the rope-makers’ historic work tradition.

Museum, Festivals, and Local Traditions

The Museo Archeologico di Frosinone offers visits to its exhibition halls and guided tours. Its educational activities are intended for schools, families, and groups visiting in their free time. A visit to the museum can therefore also be tailored to an interest in archaeological subjects.

The Carnevale Storico Frusinate and the Festa della Radeca have been officially recognised as a Historic Carnival by the Italian Ministry of Culture. The Festa della Radeca is Frosinone’s carnival tradition; its significance is linked to the memory of the Frusinates’ uprising against French occupying troops in 1798 and 1799. Another annual event is the Festival Nazionale ed Europeo dei Conservatori Italiani: it takes place in July, with public performances held in Piazza Vittorio Veneto during the festival. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the event dates for your travel period. Fini fini are also part of the city’s gastronomic tradition; their flavours and methods of preparation have been passed down over time.

Getting to the Historic Centre

The Frosinone Centro service combines a regional train journey to Frosinone railway station with a subsequent bus ride to the historic centre. Check the service details before your trip. This lets you take the journey into account when planning, without assuming a particular timetable.
