Discover San Vito Al Torre
Accommodation in San Vito Al Torre
Explore San Vito al Torre through its history and cycling. The town remained under the rule of the Patriarchate of Aquileia until 1526; the “10 mila passi di salute FVG” circular route also passes through San Vito al Torre and the rural landscape typical of the Friulian plain. Another cycling route between Palmanova and the Torre River passes historic buildings in Nogaredo al Torre and Crauglio. This lets you choose between local history, architecture and different types of cycling routes for your trip.
Local History and Churches
San Vito al Torre was probably part of a Roman garrison dependent on Aquileia. This historical interpretation remains probable; the period of rule by the Patriarchate lasted until 1526. The two details place different emphasis on the town’s history. The Church of Saints Vitus and Modestus (Chiesa dei Santi Vito e Modesto) stands in the square in the historic centre of San Vito al Torre.
In Crauglio, the Church of Saint Cancian the Martyr (Chiesa di San Canciano Martire) reflects the appearance of the late medieval chapel that previously stood on the same site. Its bell tower is integrated into the main façade and was built about a decade before the church was rebuilt. The building therefore reveals different construction phases. The parish church of Crauglio dates from the 18th century. Dates are recorded for the villas: Villa Steffaneo in Crauglio dates from 1640, and Villa Maniago in Nogaredo from 1755. These two dates allow for a specific chronological comparison, while the parish church is dated only to a century.
Villas and Architectural Forms
At Villa Gorgo Maniago, the arrangement of the buildings shapes the overall impression: the manor house is joined by two side wings set perpendicular to the central section, forming an enclosed courtyard, as well as a small chapel. The manor house’s history also includes a devastating fire in the mid-19th century, which destroyed a large part of it. Only traces remain of the frescoes attributed to Chiarottini. The architectural form and surviving fresco traces offer different points of interest as you explore the villa.
Palazzo Steffaneo Roncato is arranged around a central building. Two side farm wings, known as barchesse, extend from it. One ends in the agricultural village centre, the other in the area of the brickworks. Their different endpoints make the complex’s extent easier to understand. A guided tour includes the historic residence, garden, brickworks and chapel. Check the dates on which tours are offered before your visit.
Combine Cycling and Culture
The cycling route between Palmanova and the Torre River passes the Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle (Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo) in Nogaredo al Torre and Villa Gorgo Maniago in Nogaredo. In Crauglio, it also passes Palazzo Steffaneo Roncato. The route is therefore marked by specific buildings along its course. Cycling provides another way to explore the historic buildings, without implying that each sight is part of an on-site guided visit.
The “10 mila passi di salute FVG” circular route offers a different experience: it follows unpaved roads through San Vito al Torre and an attractive rural landscape typical of the Friulian plain. The two routes differ in the features described: the first focuses on buildings along the route between Palmanova and the Torre River, while the second is defined by its circular layout, unpaved surface and landscape. This can help you tailor the cycling focus of your trip to the themes that interest you.
