When choosing a stay in Lauco, nature, outdoor activities and cultural attractions are all on offer. The Vinadia Gorge has distinctive landscape features and a walkable section that can only be explored when water levels are low. There are also three cross-country ski trails on the plateau and several notable buildings in Lauco and Trava. Which of these appeals to you can help shape your travel plans.

Landscape and access

Part of the municipality of Lauco lies within the Carnic Hills Intermunicipal Park. The landscape shifts between gentle hills, meadows and wooded areas. The Vinadia Gorge consists of three large ravines, through which the Rio Chiantone, Rio Pichions and Rio Vinadia flow. The landscape is therefore defined by both varied terrain and three named waterways.

The outer section of the gorge begins just below Vinaio, which lies at an altitude of 807 metres in the municipality of Lauco. When water levels are low, this section can be walked without major difficulty. Water levels are key to visiting: check the current conditions before entering the gorge.

Cross-country skiing and cultural heritage

There are three cross-country ski trails on the plateau of Lauco, which lies at an altitude of 700 metres. Cross-country skiing is one way to experience Lauco, alongside the natural setting of the gorge and the cultural sights. If you are choosing your trip based on a particular activity, you can consider these options separately: cross-country skiing on the plateau, walking through the gorge when water levels are low, or exploring the town’s buildings.

The historic buildings vary in location and date. The Chiesa del Santo Nome di Maria in Trava dates from the 16th century. Also in Trava is Palazzo Beorchia, an example of 18th-century Friulian-Carnic architecture with arcades. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Tutti i Santi in Lauco was built from the 18th century onwards. Casa di Elena Cimenti on Via Centrale is a reminder of the area’s historic local architecture. Borgo Cavocjarie is considered Lauco’s most typical hamlet. The area’s architectural heritage thus includes specific churches, a building with arcades and a distinctive hamlet.

Traditional festivals are also part of Lauco’s cultural life. “Lancio das Cidulas” is associated with 30 October in Buttea and 31 October in Pesmolêt; check the current programme when planning your trip. The “Rievocazione storica del venerdì santo – Via Crucis Vivente” is also one of the traditional festivals. Check the dates and programme locally for your travel period.
