There are several distinct themes to explore during a stay in Aiello del Friuli: artistic sundials, church art, medieval architecture, and the rural surroundings. Sundials and historic buildings offer different cultural and historical perspectives; the Green Route adds a trail between Joannis and Novacco. Art, local history, and landscape thus stand alongside one another as different focal points.

Sundials and Gnomonics

Aiello del Friuli has more than eighty artistic sundials representing various styles and periods. These include an altitude sundial, an equatorial sundial, and a mosaic sundial. The number may change as installations are added or removed. The examples illustrate the range of designs within the subject.

The Centro didattico delle meridiane gives visitors an intuitive introduction to gnomonics, the study of sundials. As visiting arrangements may change, it is best to check current visiting options in advance.

Church and Regional History

The parish church of Sant'Ulderico has been in use since 1691. Its dome was painted in 1900 by Clemente Delneri, who came from Gorizia. The altars of the Holy Souls and Saint Anthony the Abbot include an altarpiece by Pietro Bainville. The church thus combines its long history with specific artistic details.

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina del Friuli Imperiale was founded in 1992 to preserve the everyday life and material culture of eastern Friuli. Its focus is particularly on the former counties of Gorizia and Gradisca under Habsburg rule, from 1500 to 1918. Rather than focusing on a single building, the museum highlights the everyday life and material culture of a broader historical region.

The Medieval Centa

The remains of the former church of S. Agnese include part of the rear wall with the main altar, as well as traces of frescoes visible on the outside. The secular part of the medieval Centa comprises two stone buildings from the late Middle Ages, possibly from the 15th century. This dating is uncertain. One of the buildings is known as the “canipa.” The medieval Centa outside Joannis was probably a fortified defensive complex.

Green Route and Rural Surroundings

The Green Route in Aiello del Friuli connects villages, rural surroundings, and springs between Joannis and Novacco. Along the way, it passes historic villas, tree-lined paths, and sundials. A section completely covered by trees is called “the Gallery.” Local conditions may vary; take this into account when planning.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The Festa delle Meridiane has been held in Aiello del Friuli since 2001; its exact dates may vary. The Fiera di San Carlo is held every year and has been running for almost two centuries. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the specific event dates in advance.

The production of goose salami is also associated with Aiello del Friuli. Together with the sundials, church art, and historic sites, this culinary tradition adds to the range of local themes you can consider when planning your trip.
