Palazzolo Dello Stella brings together archaeological traces from the Neolithic and Roman periods with fresco art, chapels, and activities on the water and by bike. These varied interests can help you choose a hotel: decide whether you would like to include historic sites, a cycling trip, or a journey along the Stella in your travel plans.

Archaeological traces from the Neolithic period to Roman times

The Museo dello Stella is an archaeological museum in Piancada, housed in the Casa del Marinaretto. Most of its collections come from excavations at a nearby Neolithic village, which has been studied stratigraphically since 1992. The collections are being reorganized. Check the current situation before visiting.

At Piancada-Lamarutto is the archaeological site PdS 010/ UA PALAZZOLO 02, a rural villa from Roman times. It features numerous mosaic tesserae and marble slabs used for flooring and wall coverings. The specific materials and their uses give the site a vivid character that goes beyond simply identifying it as a Roman villa.

Archaeological excavations in Palazzolo dello Stella also uncovered the remains of a Neolithic burial. They are associated with the inhabitants of the village there. Based on an underwater survey conducted in 2021, the remains of the Roman bridge on the Via Annia are thought to indicate that it had two arches. A Roman milestone is dedicated to Emperor Constantine and is dated to after 312 AD.

Local history and memory along the Stella

The place name Ciasteòn recalls a fortified lowland settlement built by Palaeo-Venetian groups to control the crossing of the Stella River. The fortification has been completely dismantled; its memory lives on in the place name and in archaeological traces. Ciasteòn thus points both to the settlement’s former function and to the importance of the river crossing.

Frescoes and chapels

The Chiesetta della Beata Vergine del Suffragio is known for its frescoes from the first half of the 16th century. Its presbytery has a barrel vault and is entirely covered with paintings. Here, the specific date of the frescoes and the interior’s distinctive design can be considered together.

Distinct from this chapel is the votive chapel Chiesetta di Sant’Antonio Abate in Piancada, which dates from the 15th century. Another Chiesetta di Sant’Antonio Abate stands on the embankment of the Turgnano River and is a regular destination for cyclists and walkers. The similar names therefore refer to different locations and visitor interests.

By bike or on the water

The Stella Cycle Route R024 passes the Stazione Ferroviaria Palazzolo dello Stella railway station as a waypoint. Parts of the route follow flat, shared-use asphalt roads, well-maintained gravel paths, and cycle paths. The surfaces and waypoints are relevant when planning: surface conditions may change due to maintenance work, and waypoint details may be updated when routes are revised. So check the latest route information before setting out.

Another way to experience the Stella is to travel in small boats from the river mouth to the small, picturesque harbor of Rivarotta. The cycle route and boat trip offer different experiences: for the cycling route, waypoints and surfaces matter, while the boat trip focuses on the stretch between the river mouth and the harbor.
