Grimacco lies in the upper Cosizza Valley, in the heart of the Julian Prealps. Three distinct perspectives can help you find your bearings: trails on Monte San Martino, traces of rural architecture and everyday culture, and recurring events. This makes it easy to plan your stay around whether you are most interested in the landscape, history or cultural events.

Trails and views on Monte San Martino

The Clastra–San Martino nature trail (CAI 761) reaches the old Church of San Martino, dating from the 13th century, and the mountain’s panoramic summit at 987 metres. From the summit area, the view stretches to the Colovrat ridge and the villages of Drenchia and Clabuzzaro. At several points, the nature trail crosses the Cammino delle 44 chiesette votive of the Natisone Valleys. The route description thus brings together a viewpoint and a historic religious building with a second named trail.

Just before Canalaz, a forest track branches off from the road and climbs the western slope to a large mown meadow. From there, a footpath leads to the church and the summit of Monte San Martino. This route differs from a direct start at the summit: first, the track leads to the meadow, then the path continues from there.

Just after Seuza, a forest track branches off towards Topolò. It follows the right bank of the Val Codariana watercourse for some distance and becomes a footpath after crossing the Zavelincelman stream. As trail conditions can vary, it is worth checking them before setting out.

Rural architecture and landscape features

Traditional rural architecture survives in Brida, with houses made of stone and wood. The Castagno di Canalaz is a monumental tree more than 400 years old. The two examples offer different impressions of how the landscape of Grimacco has been shaped: traditional building methods on the one hand, and a striking tree with a history spanning many centuries on the other.

The ruins of an old mill can also be seen near the mouth of the Codarina stream. Together with the trails, the summit panorama and the preserved houses, these features offer different ways to explore the landscape and its history.

Collections and recurring events

The Museo Ruttar preserves objects illustrating the customs of rural society in the Natisone Valleys at the beginning of the 20th century. The Žefcjova family collection preserves documents and objects from life in the Natisone Valleys from 1600 to the present day. Their timeframes therefore differ: the family collection spans a broad period, while the Museo Ruttar focuses on customs from the early 20th century.

Recurring events also offer specific dates to plan around. In Clodig di Grimacco, the Burial of Carnival is celebrated every year on Ash Wednesday. An international avant-garde festival takes place in Topolò every July. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the exact dates before making your plans.
