Artegna brings together sacred sites, traces of history and outdoor destinations. During your stay, you can focus on churches and art, archaeological remains on Colle di San Martino, or routes to destinations by the water and at higher elevations. If you are looking for a hotel in Artegna, this guide provides an informative starting point for planning.
Sacred Buildings and Art
The Pieve di Santa Maria Nascente was built in 1824, blessed on Christmas Eve 1830 and consecrated in 1854. The dates mark three distinct stages in its history: construction, blessing and consecration.
The Chiesetta di Santo Stefano stands on the hill above the hamlet of Clama. Near Sottocastello lies the Chiesetta di San Leonardo, which is documented in a record from the late 13th century. Inside is a 19th-century altarpiece depicting Saints Bernardino of Siena, Leonard of Noblac and Simon the Apostle venerating the Madonna and Child.
At Aplia Superiore, the Chiesetta di San Giorgio was rebuilt after the 1976 earthquake and rededicated in 2013. Its façades bear the names of Artegna residents who fell in both world wars; the history of Aquileia is also depicted there. The Chiesetta di San Martino in Artegna dates from the 16th century.
Historic Townscape and Colle di San Martino
The central Via Villa preserves the historic street layout through its long line of buildings and several architecturally significant palazzi. The history of the town is reflected not only in individual buildings, but also in the shape of the street.
The monumental complex on Colle di San Martino includes a pieve and the Castello di Savorgnan. The visiting route takes in the monumental remains of a cistern dating from the 5th to 6th century, ring walls and other excavated parts of a fortified settlement from late antiquity and the Middle Ages. The dating of the cistern can thus be distinguished from the broader span of the settlement remains.
Waterfall and Routes
The multi-tiered La Turbine waterfall can be viewed in its entirety from its base; a path leads to its top.
The easy Artegna route leads from the town center along a wooded path on the edge of the village to the centuries-old Mont washhouse by the Clama stream. Another hiking trail leads from the village of Artegna up Mount Faeit. The Osoppo and Gemona Plain cycle circuit starts in Artegna; from Buja, it continues across the plain towards Artegna.
Local Tradition and Nearby Area
The Festa del norcino is considered one of the oldest Friulian traditions in the region. Lavio di Salt lies nearby, along the road from Artegna to Montenars, below the bridge over the Torrente Orvenco and just beyond the hamlet of Salt; the site is quite large.
