Cattolica is the southernmost seaside resort on the Adriatic coast of Emilia-Romagna and lies on the border with the Marche region. The city is set in a natural bay at the foot of Monte San Bartolo.

Beaches and Maritime Tradition

Cattolica’s free beaches are accessible at no charge and are easy to reach on foot or by bike. This is a practical consideration if beach visits are part of your plans. The sea has also shaped the city’s history: the Museo della Regina documents Cattolica’s history, particularly the Roman Republican period and its maritime tradition. It includes an archaeological section and an ethno-anthropological section dedicated to traditional maritime culture.

The historic harbour is also part of the city’s maritime character and has traditionally been a point of reference for the local fishing fleet. In Cattolica, the beach and harbour thus represent different sides of life by the sea: the free beaches on one hand, and the longstanding connection to fishing on the other.

Museum, Theatre and Aquarium

The Teatro della Regina offers a varied and ongoing programme; individual programme details change. During the summer season, the Arena della Regina hosts open-air performances and concerts. If you would like to combine your visit with a performance, check the current programme for specific dates.

Acquario di Cattolica is a marine-themed park. Its technology-focused attractions offer encounters with marine animals, including sharks. The four indoor routes are called Blue, Green, Yellow and Purple. However, bad weather can lead to queues forming outdoors; the indoor routes therefore do not mean that the entire visit will be free of outdoor waiting.

The stated ticket coverage includes five offerings: the three Blue, Green and Yellow routes, the outdoor exhibition “The World of Dinosaurs” and the indoor “Giant Insects XXL Edition.” Check the current ticket information before your visit. From Cattolica station, take bus 125 to stop 71, “Cattolica Aquarium,” to reach the aquarium. You should also check the bus service information again before travelling.

Boat Trips and Hinterland Activities

There are different departure points and options for excursions on the water. Trips on the Narvalo depart from Marina di Cattolica and are accompanied by experienced skippers. Cutter trips depart directly from the beach or harbour. Many include swimming stops in particularly attractive coves; individual trips may vary. Some cutter operators also organise sunset aperitifs at sea. As offers and availability may vary by operator and season, check the specific details before making plans.

The hinterland is also among the visitor experiences available from Cattolica. The A SPASS programme offers seven guided excursions through villages and rolling hills to culinary destinations in Romagna. Other options include cycling tours in the hinterland and trekking in nature. For A SPASS guided tours, it is advisable to check the current programme.

Local Specialities

Miacetto is Cattolica’s traditional Christmas Eve pastry and is made exclusively in the city. This speciality is therefore particularly associated with a specific occasion in the annual calendar. A Piadina Experience, which includes a visit and workshop, is also offered for groups. As availability can change, check in advance whether the experience is taking place at your preferred time.
