Vigoleno is a fortified village whose buildings and landscape appeal to visitors with different interests. During your stay, you can focus on defensive architecture, local history, nature and geology, or the local Passito wine. The well-preserved crenellated walls give the village its distinctive fortified appearance.

Fortified village, ramparts and tower

The ramparts along the village offer views over the Val Stirone. From the roof of the fortified tower, the view extends across the surrounding landscape. These two vantage points offer different perspectives: the Val Stirone is the focal point from the ramparts, while from the tower roof you can look out over the surrounding landscape. In this way, the defensive architecture offers a distinct perspective on the landscape.

The square keep has four levels open to visitors. Together, these features make up the fortified character of Vigoleno: the crenellated walls, the ramparts, the tower with its views of the landscape, and the keep with its multiple levels. Visitors interested in the history of fortified places can look at each of these features individually while also recognizing their shared connection to the village.

Church, main square and theatre

The parish church of San Giorgio is a Romanesque church dating from the second half of the 12th century. A fountain dating from the 16th century stands in Vigoleno’s main square. The dates mark different historical periods: the church dates from the High Middle Ages, while the fountain was built several centuries later. This comparison adds a sense of historical time to the story of the village without equating the two buildings.

Another cultural highlight is the Ruspoli Gramont Theatre in the Castle-Palazzo Scotti. It is a historic theatre of Emilia-Romagna and has 12 seats. Together with the parish church and the fountain, the theatre adds another aspect of cultural history to Vigoleno. Its specific seating capacity also makes it clear that the theatre is a distinct venue with a defined size.

Nature, geology and circular trail

At the foot of Vigoleno Castle, there is dense vegetation with flora and fauna, as well as nature trails. Nearby, the geosite area by Vigoleno features calcarénite outcrops with numerous macrofossils. Nature and geology are therefore distinct themes alongside the village’s built heritage. For travellers interested in rocks and fossils, the geosite area offers a different perspective from the walls, church or keep.

The Anello dei briganti circular trail also starts in Vigoleno. Its starting point makes it another option to consider when planning your trip. The nature trails at the foot of the castle, geological outcrops and circular trail are distinct features; mentioning them together does not imply that the trails are connected.

Vin Santo di Vigoleno and Vinoleno

Vin Santo di Vigoleno is a Passito wine with a controlled designation of origin (DOC). In May and November, Vinoleno celebrates the local Passito from Vigoleno with tastings and exhibitions. This distinguishes the wine as a local product from the celebrations as a separate occasion. If you would like to include tastings or exhibitions in your trip, check the specific event dates when planning.

One distinction is important when choosing when to travel: the architectural and geological features are enduring aspects of the village, while Vinoleno puts the Passito in the spotlight in May and November. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can choose your travel dates based on your personal interests.
