Vigolzone: Culture, Wine and Trails
Accommodation in Vigolzone
Vigolzone combines historic townscapes with wine and grape-growing culture, as well as trails through the countryside. If you are looking for a hotel for a cultural getaway, you can focus on Grazzano Visconti, the Museo della Vite e del Vino Fernando Pizzamiglio, or the walking and cycling trails. Regional cuisine and the date of the Festa del tortello De.Co. may also play a part in planning your trip. This way, you can first decide based on the activities you would like to enjoy while you are there.
Townscapes and architecture
The historic center of Grazzano Visconti was designed in an authentic neo-medieval style around the castle and laid out in a horseshoe shape. Its craft traditions include wrought iron, ceramics, and wood: local workshops work with these materials using traditional methods. The architecture and crafts therefore offer two different ways to experience the town's culture. The historic center can be visited free of charge every day; it may exceptionally be closed during special events.
Another architectural landmark is the Rocca Anguissola, also known as Castello di Vigolzone. It has a rectangular floor plan and two towers at opposite corners. The castle remains privately owned. You can view it from the gate; the towers can also be seen from the piazza in front. The 17th-century oratory opens for special occasions. If you would like to include it in your plans, check in advance whether an opening is scheduled.
Wine and grape-growing history, regional cuisine
At the Museo della Vite e del Vino Fernando Pizzamiglio, an interactive tour links sites outside Vigolzone with the winery and the library. The tour begins outside the town and continues through the winery to the library. The library contains around 1,100 books on wine and grape-growing culture, as well as documents dating from the 14th to the 20th century. If a museum visit is an important part of your plans, check the current arrangements in advance.
The landscape also reflects the region's wine culture: Vigolzone includes hills covered in vineyards and areas shaped by wineries. The town is part of the Strada dei vini e dei sapori dei colli piacentini. Tortelli con la coda has been a De.Co. product of the municipality since 2006. If you are interested in this regional specialty, you can also take the Festa del tortello De.Co. into account. It takes place every year in late July; the exact date varies from year to year.
Walking and cycling trails
Le Antiche Vie refers to seven combined cycling and walking trails in the municipality of Vigolzone. The descriptions of Percorso 1 – Verde, Percorso 4 – Rosso, and Percorso 5 – Arancio highlight different features. Percorso 1 is suitable for the whole family and can be ridden on foot or by mountain bike without any special preparation. Percorso 4 starts in Grazzano Visconti, climbs the hill of Vigolzone, and returns through the medieval village along the ancient road of the mills.
Percorso 5 – Arancio runs along the ancient road of the mills and the Nure riverbed through a protected floodplain that provides a habitat for many wild animals. The routes described therefore differ in their paths and features: Percorso 4 includes a climb, while Percorso 5 passes through a protected habitat. Check current local trail information before setting out.
In addition, the nature trails in Val Nure-Val Chero pass through Vigolzone and connect the town with Carpaneto, San Giorgio Piacentino, Podenzano, and Ponte dell’Olio. These trails take you beyond the municipality, with the listed towns serving as specific reference points for route planning. If you would like to combine your hotel stay with a hike, you can use the route descriptions to decide whether to focus on the climb, the old road of the mills, or the floodplain.
