Piozzano: Luretta Valley, Church Art and Rural Paths
Accommodation in Piozzano
Piozzano lies in the green Luretta Valley. This destination combines rural scenery with ecclesiastical heritage and paths for outdoor activities. Three themes therefore take center stage when planning a trip: the differences between the middle and upper hill country, the sacred and historical heritage, and regional cuisine.
Landscape Between Fields and Coppice
In the middle hill country, well-tended farmland shapes the landscape almost everywhere, while coppice dominates the upper hill country. Small rural settlements and scattered houses, most of them built of stone, complete the picture. Piozzano is defined not only by its valley location, but also by the changing landscape across the hill country.
In many places, roads run along the ridgelines. From there, views stretch far across the plain and, when visibility is good, as far as the Alps. This vista is one of the area’s characteristic landscape impressions: the view across the plain is expansive, while seeing the Alps depends explicitly on good visibility. A regional tourism website, updated in 2023, names spring and autumn as the best seasons to visit.
Churches and Historical Heritage
The churches in the local districts preserve various examples of sacred art and architecture. These include Romanesque apses, hanging arches, portals with elegant bifora windows, wooden sculptures and valuable paintings. These features are described as part of the diversity of ecclesiastical heritage; they are not all attributed to a single church building. One specific example is the parish church of SS Salvatore in Piozzano: its portal was created by the sculptor Paolo Perotti from Piacenza.
Castles and fortifications are also part of the area’s historical heritage. Only a few remains survive of Piozzano Castle, Castelvecchio. Monteventano has a cylindrical keep associated with a fortification dating back to the 10th century. Pomaro has a church of Romanesque origin, castle ruins survive in Montecanino, and San Gabriele is home to the Church of San Giovanni. Together, these examples illustrate different aspects of the cultural heritage in the Piozzano area.
Trails and Outdoor Activities
Piozzano lies on the Cammino di San Colombano. This slow and sustainable tourism route runs from Switzerland through Lombardy to Bobbio Abbey and can be traveled on foot or by bicycle. There are also trekking trails around Piozzano. As trail conditions can change, check the route before setting out.
In December 2023, the start of the Anello di Torre Rizzi loop from Strada dei Giganti was signposted. Local signage may change, so check it on site. This time-specific detail can be particularly helpful for finding your way, while the Cammino di San Colombano, as a long-distance route, offers a different perspective on traveling through the area.
Regional Cuisine
One local dish is “Duls e brusc”: chicken, turkey or pork is first boiled and then cooked in a sauce. The sauce includes oil, lard, onions, vinegar, sugar and raisins. Sweet and sour flavors accompany the savory ingredients; the preparation described makes the dish a distinctive part of the culinary tradition.
DOP-certified cured meats are also part of the local cuisine. Together with “Duls e brusc,” they give an impression of the regional dishes that characterize Piozzano. Church art, rural scenery, trails and culinary traditions offer different themes around which to plan your trip.
