Vignale: Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Vignale
Vignale is considered a natural balcony overlooking the Torrente Enza. The river landscape, the Cronovilla WWF Nature Oasis, and the historic buildings give the town several distinct facets. When planning your stay, it is worth considering the oasis’s nature trails, the specific hiking route, and the area’s cultural history as separate topics.
Cronovilla on the Torrente Enza
The protected Cronovilla area lies on the left bank of the Torrente Enza, near the mouth of the Torrente Termina. The Cronovilla WWF Nature Oasis is located along this bank in the hamlet of Vignale. The oasis has nature trails; the sport fishing lakes associated with Cronovilla host competitions at national and international levels.
Access to the Cronovilla Oasis is via Via San Geminiano from the hamlet of Vignale. Then follow the signs to the Cronovilla Nature Oasis and the sport fishing lakes of the same name. As signs and access rules may change, check the information before setting out.
Hiking Route to Guardiola
A hiking route starts in the residential district of Vignale and leads to the medieval Guardiola watchtower at an elevation of 380 meters. Published in August 2025, the route covers a total of 25.4 kilometers, with 681 meters of elevation gain and a walking time of about seven hours. It continues via Guardasone, Bazzano, Monte Castello, Monte Lugaro, and into the Enza area. These figures refer to the entire route, not just the section between Vignale and the watchtower. Check route conditions before setting out.
The oasis’s nature trails and the hike to Guardiola are different ways to explore Vignale’s landscape. For the hike to the watchtower, you can take the total distance, elevation gain, and approximate walking time into account when planning.
History, Art, and Feast Days
San Geminiano and the Church of the Assumption are both listed in the tithe records of 1230. The Church of the Assumption and San Geminiano in Vignale is associated with the Renaissance cultural milieu and dates to the first half of the 16th century. It houses the painting “Vergine del Rosario con il Bambino,” attributed to an Emilian painter from between the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
The municipal plan of Traversetolo lists the Villino de Strobel in Vignale as a cultural asset of historical and architectural value. After 1905, Daniele de Strobel painted large canvases in a studio at the villa he had built near his father’s villa in Vignale. The name Cronovilla also has a historical origin: Luigi Beccarelli founded the Beccarelli clock factory in 1882, which gave the locality its name.
The two religious feast days fall at different times of the year: San Mauro is Vignale’s patron saint and is celebrated on January 15; the Feast of the Assumption at the church in Vignale takes place on August 15. Local arrangements may change. If you are planning your stay around one of the feast days, check local information in advance.
