The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, trails on Monte Fuso and memorial sites of the partisan war give Sasso several distinct points of interest. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the routes by destination and format: the Sentiero resistente is a loop trail, while other routes connect parish churches or lead as far as Castello di Canossa.

Pieve and viewpoints

The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta di Sasso stands on a rocky outcrop and offers views over the Val Termina di Castione. You can reach the church via Strada Provinciale 17 and Strada Magrignano. Hiking and cycling routes lead from the Pieve to the summit of Monte Fuso. The church and trails therefore offer different points of interest: one looks out over the valley, while the routes continue uphill to the summit.

La Rupe di Sasso is a viewpoint in Neviano degli Arduini. If you are including various viewpoints in your plans, you can note this name as a separate location.

Trails with different destinations

The Via delle Pievi is recommended for walking or mountain biking. It passes through the municipalities of Traversetolo and Neviano degli Arduini and, over a straight-line distance of 20 kilometers, passes the four parish churches of Traversetolo, Bazzano, Sasso and Scurano.

The Sentiero resistente consists of three sections that together form a 20-kilometer loop trail. It connects the Museo della Resistenza with the Centro faunistico del Monte Fuso, passes through Rusino and returns to Sasso. Covered as a stage route, it connects and tells the story of eleven locations of the liberation struggle against the Nazi-Fascists in the valleys of Monte Fuso in the Parma Apennines.

The context of each of the two 20-kilometer figures is important: for the Sentiero resistente, it refers to the length of the loop trail. For the Via delle Pievi, the figure refers to a straight-line distance along which the four parish churches are passed. This makes it possible to understand the routes without treating their measurements as equivalent.

Resistenza history and memorial sites

The first core of what is now the Museo Storico della Resistenza di Sasso was established in 1973. The museum displays memorabilia and a series of videos about important moments of the partisan war in the mountains. If you are planning a visit, check current access arrangements in advance.

The individual locations on the Sentiero resistente also contribute to the historical context. At each of these locations, you can scan a QR code to download the GPX track of the route and listen to selected audio recordings. On the route from the Museo della Resistenza di Sasso to the Centro Faunistico Monte Fuso, there is a monument in the village of La Pietra. It commemorates one of the victims of the raid of July 1, 1944.

A longer connection to Canossa

The Sentiero di Arduino is about 35 kilometers long and connects the Pieve di Sasso in the municipality of Neviano degli Arduini with Castello di Canossa. Alongside the loop trail of the Sentiero resistente, this offers a route with two named endpoints. Trail conditions and signage can change; check both before your hike.
