Montagnana brings together cultural and historical themes with two museums offering different perspectives: a rose garden and a museum of rural life. If you are looking for a hotel in Montagnana, these highlights can help you plan your stay. The town’s former role on the Via Giardini, its church and commemorative history, and its collections offer different perspectives on the area.

Via Giardini and the History of the Town

Montagnana lies on the Via Giardini. Since the road was completed in 1777/80, the town, with the Trattoria La Noce, served as a stopping and rest point for travellers, carters and other road users. The history of Montagnana is therefore also connected with road travel: the trattoria is named in historical accounts as part of this former stopping point, and the travellers mentioned included more than one group of road users.

Churches, a Bell and Remembrance

The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo was built in 1859 and incorporated an older building dating from 1635. Its architectural features include a rectangular floor plan, a single-nave layout and a gabled roof. These features describe different aspects of the building: its basic shape, the layout of the church interior and the form of the roof. The church can therefore be considered both in terms of its construction history and its architecture. Montagnana is also home to a bell bearing the inscription “anno del Signore 1262”, described as the oldest bell in the Modena area.

The Chiesetta della Resistenza commemorates the contribution and sacrifice of the mountain population in the partisan struggle against the Germans and Fascists in 1943–45. It was built in 1965 with the involvement of the mountain communities, the province and the municipality of Modena. The chapel is a few metres from the road and can be reached by a short flight of steps; access to the interior is limited. Its commemorative purpose and construction history give the chapel a different character from the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo.

Rose Garden and Rural Collection

The Museo Giardino della Rosa Antica covers 43 hectares. More than 800 rose varieties are found exclusively on three hectares. The visit takes you through the indoor and outdoor areas of the Parco Giardino. Aperitifs and snacks featuring rose specialities and local products can be arranged at the museum by prior order. If this dining option interests you, take the advance-order requirement into account when planning.

The Museo della CiviltĂ  Contadina di Montagnana is located inside and outside an 18th-century building and displays more than 300 agricultural implements. The museum is part of a short cultural and historical itinerary that includes the museum, an acetaia, an enoteca and a cantina. Unlike the rose garden, the focus here is on rural work and the named stops along the itinerary. This can help you distinguish between rose varieties and agricultural collection items when choosing your cultural interests.

The sites offer different ways to explore Montagnana: from its historical role in transport to architectural history and remembrance, as well as garden and agricultural themes. Deciding which of these perspectives you would like to focus on can help guide your plans for your stay.
