Colombaro: Parish Church, Golf and Cycle Path
Accommodation in Colombaro
Colombaro offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: a parish church with a long history, a championship golf course and a short cycle link to Montale Rangone. If you are looking for a hotel in Colombaro, deciding what you are most interested in will help you get a sense of the destination: culture, golf or a compact cycling route. The attractions range from a single historic building to a complex covering more than 100 hectares.
Pieve di Colombaro and the Via Romea
The Pieve di San Giacomo di Colombaro already existed in 1127 and is considered the oldest monument in the municipality of Formigine. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. This term describes a cross shape with a longer vertical arm and a shorter horizontal arm, making the architectural description easy to understand. For a culture-focused stay, the Pieve combines a clearly defined architectural feature with a historical connection reaching far back in time.
The Via Romea Germanica Imperiale runs all the way to the Pieve di Colombaro. Its Italian section runs from Trento to Arezzo for almost 600 kilometres. To get your bearings, it helps to distinguish between two geographical scales: the Pieve as a specific destination in Colombaro and the long stretch of route between the two cities.
Golf and architectural history
The Bernhard Langer championship course at Modena Golf & Country Club has 18 holes, is par 72 and measures 6,423 metres. The complex covers more than 100 hectares in Colombaro. The two figures describe different scales: the length refers to the championship course, while the area refers to the entire complex. This lets you distinguish the scale of play from the size of the grounds if you associate Colombaro mainly with golf.
Villa Maria al Tiepido is also part of the area’s historical heritage. It was built in the late 19th century in the eclectic style at the behest of Francesco Aggazzotti, and is located near the golf courses. It dates from a much later period than the Pieve, which already existed in 1127. For visitors interested in culture, the two buildings therefore represent different eras: early church history and late-19th-century villa architecture.
Cycle routes in the municipality
The Colombaro–Montale Rangone cycle path is 800 metres long. A continuous guardrail separates it from the road, and the entire route is lit. This makes it a short, clearly defined cycle link between the two places named in its title.
The Percorso Natura Secchia in the municipality of Formigine also crosses the Torrente Fossa over a metal bridge before reaching the Oasi di Colombarone. Unlike the cycle path, whose name includes two places, the river crossing and the nature area at the end are the route’s main landmarks. This means there are two distinct ways to get your bearings in the municipality: a short cycle link and a route with a named nature destination.
