Castelfranco Emilia can be explored through several distinct themes: the historic Via Emilia and its arcades, churches and archaeological collections, and the tortellino tradition. A 19th-century park and a trail in the Oasi faunistica di Manzolino are also part of the town’s character. These offer a choice of focal points for a stay, spanning urban history, culture, food culture and different kinds of routes.

Via Emilia and historic arcades

The historic Via Emilia runs through the centre of Castelfranco Emilia. The historic arcades are connected to the Via Emilia and form a continuous, one-kilometre-long covered pedestrian walkway. The town can therefore be explored both along a historic road and through a continuous pedestrian route. Those interested in urban history will find not only individual buildings here, but also a perspective on the relationship between the road and the arcades.

Churches, art and medieval traces

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is the oldest church in Castelfranco Emilia. It was probably first built along with the castle between 1226 and 1228. The church also houses a painting of the Assumption of Mary, commissioned from Guido Reni in 1625. Its building history and artwork thus point to different periods.

The Chiesa di San Giacomo offers a different focus: it preserves an organ made by Domenico Traeri in 1743 and restored in 1987. Its remarkable acoustics make the church suitable for musical concerts. Near Porta Bologna, medieval remains of the walls belonging to the defensive ring of Borgo Franco have been preserved. Together with the early building history of Santa Maria Assunta, they provide tangible points of reference for the town’s medieval heritage.

Archaeology at Palazzo Piella

The Museo Civico Archeologico “Anton Celeste Simonini” presents its collection at Palazzo Piella in chronological order and by territorial context. These two organising principles offer different perspectives on the collection: its sequence over time and its arrangement by area. New technological features help visitors follow the entire development of settlement in the area. A visit to the museum thus combines archaeological content with chronological and territorial context.

Tortellino and local production

The culinary tradition also has several points of reference. At the Acetaia Comunale, grape must from local grapes is fermented and turned into vinegar using traditional methods; production complies with the DOP specification. The Fontana del tortellino represents Castelfranco Emilia’s culinary tradition, whose symbol is the tortellino. Both vinegar production and tortellino are therefore part of the local culinary profile.

The Sagra del Tortellino takes place every year on the second Sunday in September in Castelfranco Emilia. Its recurring date gives the tradition a fixed place in the annual calendar. If you would like to give your stay a culinary focus, this festival is a distinct feature to take into account when planning your dates.

Park and trails

Parco di Villa Sorra is a significant example of a 19th-century Este romantic park. In the Oasi faunistica di Manzolino, the trail options include the 1,350-metre Percorso delle acque. For a direct comparison of lengths, this trail is 350 metres longer than the arcades’ one-kilometre covered pedestrian walkway. The two figures describe different types of route—a continuous covered passage and a named trail in the Oasi.

Forte Urbano is currently not open to the public. This access restriction sets it apart from the town’s other cultural and historical attractions and should be taken into account when planning.
