Granarolo Dell'emilia brings together several themes that may play a part in planning a stay: a cycling route, theatre offerings, historic villas and sacred art. For travellers interested in cycling, La Via Lattea offers a specific point of interest; those who prefer culture and history will find a variety of architectural and artistic details in the villas and churches. The landscape and seasonal events also shape the area. You can therefore tailor your hotel search to your own travel interests.

A cycling route with links to agriculture

La Via Lattea was established in 2015 as a cycle tourism route in Granarolo dell'Emilia and is laid out as a cycling route with ten stops. Its theme extends beyond cycling: milk and its history are presented as cultural heritage, as well as milk as a characteristic agricultural product of the area. The route thus combines its cycling theme with a look at regional agriculture and its cultural significance. If you are planning a ride, check local route conditions in advance.

Villas and works of art

Villa Fibbia, also known as Pippola, is documented in sketches dating back to 1578. Its passage loggia is adorned with large tempera paintings from the early 18th century. Another distinctive feature is the dovecote tower: its origins date back to the 16th century, and it stands in the fields about a hundred metres from the villa. The villa's name, historical record and architectural details each give it a distinct connection to a particular period and architectural style.

Villa Montanari is a simply designed manor house from the first half of the 19th century, set in a fine garden with exotic plant species. The garden is also home to a centuries-old yew tree. This long-lived evergreen is uncommon in the local plain. Opposite the entrance to Villa Montanari, the Cimitero tedesco di Villa Montanari was established during the German occupation of Italy, between 1943 and 1945. The manor house, garden and cemetery each represent different aspects of local history.

For Villa Bassi, the visiting restriction is especially important: it is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The villa includes a tower and an oratory dedicated to the Madonna della Vita. As visiting arrangements may change, check them in advance. This allows you to appreciate the villa as an architectural landmark without planning an interior visit.

The churches also preserve examples of art and history. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo houses the Madonna del Rosario con i quindici Misteri, painted by Pietro Faccini in 1600. In the municipal area, in Lovoleto, the Chiesa di San Mamante houses a 17th-century painting of the Madonna ai piedi del Crocifisso, attributed to Guglielmo Caccia, known as il Moncalvo. The same church also contains a Way of the Cross from the late 18th century.

The Chiesa di San Vitale was rebuilt in 1682. The church houses a San Girolamo attributed to Guercino; it also hosts concerts in the “Organi antichi, un patrimonio da ascoltare” series. Check the current programme for specific concert dates. The artworks and concert series offer two different ways to experience this church: through a work attributed to a particular artist and through its musical cultural programme.

Landscape and nature

The Maceri are important natural features of today's landscape. Their bodies of water are often surrounded by spontaneous vegetation and provide shelter and water for mammals and birds, as well as habitat for amphibians. Another landscape feature is the few Piantate Bolognesi that remain visible. They are important areas for biodiversity and offer a glimpse of the historic rural landscape with its “strange woods”. Together, these two examples show nature both as a habitat today and as part of an inherited cultural landscape.

Traces of the ancient Roman centuriation can be seen along smaller roads in the Quarto Inferiore area. These roads often follow a zigzag course and have right-angled bends. This reference applies specifically to the roads in Quarto Inferiore. Their layout makes the historic landscape structure in this part of the municipal area easy to see.

Theatre and events

Each theatre season, TaG – Teatro a Granarolo offers a variety of programmes featuring drama, comedy, music and children's theatre. It also runs theatre workshops for children and theatre courses for adults. The range therefore includes both performances and educational activities for different age groups. As schedules and course offerings may change, check the season's programme for your stay.

For 2026, the Sagra di Viadagola has been announced for the second week of June in Viadagola. A volunteer committee from the Viadagola parish organises the festival in a meadow near the church. The programme includes food, music, games and performances. As dates and programme details may vary, check the latest announcement before your trip. This information is especially useful if you want to time your stay to coincide with the festival.
