Borgo Tossignano between gypsum landscapes and history
Accommodation in Borgo Tossignano
In Borgo Tossignano, geological features, hiking trails and historic sites cater to a range of travel interests. The Vena del Gesso Romagnola gypsum ridge shapes the landscape of the Santerno Valley; museums and buildings offer insights into geology and local history. For planning, it helps to distinguish between these highlights: a museum visit, a hike and historic landmarks each offer a different perspective on the area.
Gypsum Landscapes and Geology
Above Borgo Tossignano, the Vena del Gesso Romagnola forms an imposing gypsum ridge in the Santerno Valley. One of the striking formations in the Vena del Gesso Romagnola Regional Park is the five-kilometre-long Riva di San Biagio. The Rio Sgarba gorge opens into its gypsum cliff. Well-preserved fish and plant fossils have been found in the gorge’s clay layers.
The Museo Geologico della Vena del Gesso Romagnola is housed in Palazzo Baronale in Tossignano and focuses on the Messinian gypsum formations. Its exhibition takes visitors through geologically significant sites in the park. You can first learn about the area’s geology in the museum and then place it in its landscape context. The palazzo itself adds a historical dimension to the visit: it was originally the feudal residence of the Altemps family.
Hiking Trails and Views
For hiking, the park lists a trail from Casa del Fiume in Borgo Tossignano to Monte Penzola. Another trail runs from Tossignano via Riva di San Biagio to Ca' Budrio. Their different start and end points make it easier to choose a route based on the landscape you would like to focus on. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
From Monte Penzola, you can look out over amphitheatres of blue clay with badland topography north of the Vena del Gesso. At Riva di San Biagio, by contrast, the gypsum formation itself takes centre stage; the Rio Sgarba gorge lies within its cliff. These features show two different sides of the landscape: the gypsum ridge and the clay formations to its north.
Casa del Fiume on the Santerno
The Casa del Fiume visitor centre is located on the banks of the Santerno River, in the part of Vena del Gesso Romagnola Park that belongs to the municipality of Borgo Tossignano. The Casa del Fiume floodplain and its facilities are free for the public to use. The centre also offers activities focused on exploring and explaining the Santerno ecosystem and the development of the Santerno Valley landscape. This means that the river as a habitat and the changing landscape around it are both in focus at the same location.
Cycling in the Regional Context
Beyond the immediate area, the Ciclovia del Santerno connects the plain around Imola with the Apennine foothills. Its surface includes both unpaved and paved roads. As route conditions can change, check the latest status before basing your cycling plans on it.
Museums and Local History
Alongside the geological museum, the Museo della cultura materiale Valter Mita offers a different perspective on history. It was founded in 1999 after Valter Mita donated his collection. While the Museo Geologico focuses on the gypsum formations and geologically significant sites in the park, this museum turns its attention to material culture and a collection.
The religious buildings also offer different historical perspectives. The first document to mention the Oratorio San Girolamo dates from 1449; the oratory was later expanded and converted into a church. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo was built in 1568, after the Dominican friar Sebastiano Gravina initiated a collection for it. Few remains of the Rocca di Tossignano Alta survive, but they offer panoramic views. Together, these places illustrate different forms of historical heritage: a documented religious development, a church building and the surviving remains of a rocca.
A Regional Tradition
The wider valley is also part of the cultural backdrop to a visit: chestnut cultivation has been practised in the Santerno Valley for over 500 years. This long-standing tradition adds a regional agricultural dimension to the geological and historical themes.
