Anyone looking for a hotel in Magliano Vetere can plan their trip around several distinct themes: trails through the local limestone ranges, the fortified settlement of Magliano Nuovo, rock chapels, and a museum associated with Cretaceous plant fossils. There are also two annual festivals, each with a different culinary focus. When planning your stay, you can decide whether landscape, culture, or a seasonal event matters most to you.

Limestone landscape and views

Trails climbing to the peaks of the local limestone ranges offer views of the Gulf of Agropoli and the island of Capri. A hike here therefore highlights both the mountain landscape and the named distant views. If you would like your stay to focus primarily on landscape and outdoor activity, these trails can form a distinct part of your trip.

Settlement, museum, and rock chapels

Magliano Nuovo is known as a fortified settlement with a substantial ring wall and seven defensive towers. This is a different cultural theme from the rock chapels, whose frescoes are a focus in their own right. The Cappella Rupestre di Santa Lucia Vergine e Martire lies above the settlement of Magliano Vetere and can only be reached on foot via trekking trails. Ancient frescoes painted on the rock are found in the cave behind the altar. Here, the place and the artwork are directly connected: the frescoes are in the cave behind the altar, while the chapel lies above the settlement.

Another rock chapel is the Cappella Rupestre di San Mauro Martire. Its frescoes date from the 15th century and depict episodes from the lives of saints, as well as angels, musicians, and singers. Unlike the ancient frescoes painted on the rock at Santa Lucia, these works offer a different historical and thematic perspective. Those interested in art and religious imagery will find two distinct themes among the chapels of Magliano Vetere.

The Museo Paleontologico del Parco Nazionale Cilento Vallo Diano e Alburni is located at Via Roma 63 in Magliano Vetere. A newly discovered fossil site containing Cretaceous plants in the municipality was the deciding factor in choosing the location. This adds a paleontological dimension to the fortified settlement and frescoes: the fossil site explains why the museum was established in Magliano Vetere.

Comparing hiking routes

The Gole del Calore loop trail follows an approximately five-kilometer route along the riverbed toward Magliano Vetere and reaches the foot of Magliano Nuovo. The Monte Faito–Monte Chianiello–Varco Cervone loop is on a different scale: it starts in the center of Monteforte Cilento, is about 19 kilometers long, and offers views of Monte Faito and the Rupa della Noce in Magliano Vetere. Comparing the two routes directly, the Gole del Calore loop is the shorter of the two described trails. Their landscape features also differ: the riverbed is the focus of the former, while the latter offers views of the named mountains.

Another trekking trail connects Capizzo with the Cappella Rupestre di San Mauro Martire; the chapel is about an hour’s walk from the town. If you are planning a hike as part of your trip, you can use the approximate lengths of the two loop trails and the walk to the chapel as different points of reference.

Festivals and regional dishes

The Sagra del Cavatiello Maglianese takes place every year from July 31 to August 6 in Piazza Belvedere in Magliano Nuovo. It features handmade regional specialties. The Sagra Della Castagna takes place every year in December in the main town of Magliano Vetere and showcases chestnuts gathered from the municipality’s chestnut groves. The two festivals therefore differ both in their time of year and their culinary focus: in summer, dishes in Magliano Nuovo take center stage; in December, it is chestnuts from the municipality’s groves. If you would like to plan your trip around either festival, check the exact dates in advance.
