Discover Capitello
Accommodation in Capitello
Capitello is the seaside district of the municipality of Ispani. If you are looking for a hotel here, you can start by considering the beaches, architectural history and road connections. Spiaggia di Capitello includes both free beach areas and managed bathing areas. The town also offers insights into the history of its church, a doll museum and several historical landmarks. Connections to Ispani and San Cristoforo add practical directions to these topics for planning your trip.
Beach and directions
The beach has both free areas and managed bathing areas. As individual businesses may change, check before your trip which managed areas are currently available. This will help you distinguish between the two types of beach when planning, without assuming that any particular business will be operating.
The SS18 runs through Capitello. From there, you can take the SP110 to Ispani and San Cristoforo. These road details provide different points of reference: the SS18 runs through the town, while the SP110 connects it in the direction of the two places mentioned. In the 2026 season, the Comune di Ispani also operated the Punto Blu, a tourist information office, on the seafront. It was open from 15 July to 15 September 2026.
Church, collection and local history
The Chiesa di San Ferdinando Re is in the centre of the seaside district of Capitello, on flat ground along a road running parallel to the seafront. The road is accessible to motor vehicles. The original church was a single-nave space with a semicircular apse and a bell tower adjoining it on the side. A small side aisle and additional rooms were added in the early 20th century. This sequence makes it possible to distinguish the original building from the later extension.
The Piccolo Museo della Bambola “Cinzia Falcone” is based on a collection of dolls from different periods. A woman of Cilentan origin donated the collection to the community. The museum thus connects the dolls with the story of a gift and its place in the community.
The Torre costiera del ’500 is considered a former defensive and observation tower used to spot Saracen ships. Around 1055, the military leader Ruggiero I and his nephew Ruggiero d’Apulia built a Norman castle on the hill near Capitello now known as Castellaro. Remains of the castle are present on the hill. The two sites thus point to different chapters in Capitello’s history: coastal defence and the Norman castle.
A 2021 description reports on the entrance arch to the gardens of the former Palazzo Carafa. An inscription above the arch warned potential intruders of the resolve of the feudal lords of the time. The same description says that the enclosing walls around the garden have been preserved and reports that, at the time, the Palazzo housed a convent owned by the Suore Elisabettine Bigie.
Routes and local traditions
Since 2014, a stone path has connected Capitello with San Cristoforo. This means that, alongside the road connections, a stone route between the two places is another point of reference. When planning your trip, you can distinguish it from the SP110: the stone path connects Capitello with San Cristoforo, while the road leads towards San Cristoforo and Ispani.
A 2021 article describes the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua, which took place on 12 and 13 June. For 12 June, it describes the Processione del pane: worshippers brought baskets of bread to be blessed and then gave them to relatives. On the afternoon of 13 June, a Riffa auction was held to collect donations. Items donated by worshippers and typical local products were offered. Together, these traditions as described show different aspects of the feast: the blessing and sharing of bread, and the collection of donations through an auction.
When looking for hotels in Capitello, you can weigh these different aspects of your trip: the beaches, architectural and local history, or road connections to Ispani and San Cristoforo. Information about the beaches helps you distinguish between free and managed areas; the church, museum and historical sites offer further themes to consider when choosing your destination.
