If you are choosing between ancient culture and coastal scenery for a stay in Ascea, Velia and Marina di Ascea offer different highlights. Velia is associated with the history of ancient Elea and the Eleatic school; in Marina di Ascea, the beach and coastal paths take centre stage. This can help you decide whether historic buildings or the landscape should shape your stay more strongly.

Velia: ancient architecture and history

The Porta Rosa in Velia is a sandstone arch built entirely without mortar, with a barrel vault. Its function sets it apart from a gate: it served as a viaduct. “Built without mortar” describes a construction method in which stones are joined without mortar. The Casa degli affreschi offers a different perspective on ancient architecture. This peristyle house dates from the first decades of the 2nd century BC, covers about 400 m² and has more than 30 rooms. A peristyle house is built around an inner courtyard surrounded by columns; its area and number of rooms also show the scale of the complex.

Velia was founded around 540 BC by inhabitants of Phocaea. The ancient cultural heritage of Elea, also known as Velia, is associated with the Eleatic school and the philosophers Parmenides, Zeno and Melissus of Samos. This connection provides a historical context for the archaeological buildings: the site is not only about individual walls and structures, but also a place linked to a philosophical tradition.

Buildings and exhibition spaces

The Roman necropolis of Porta Marina Sud is located within the Velia archaeological site. Small mausoleums and several burial enclosures can be seen there. The Masseria Cobellis is a monumental ancient complex from the 1st to 2nd century AD, built on several levels around a spring. The Roman Baths of Velia form a trapezoidal thermal complex from the same period. These are distinct from the Hellenistic baths: they were public bathing facilities available to citizens.

The layout of other sites can also be clearly distinguished. The Hellenistic Asklepeion is arranged across three terraces, while the Acropolis spans two. The visible Teatro di Velia dates to a Roman renovation and could accommodate about 2,000 spectators. Velia’s archaeological heritage thus includes structures with different functions and from different periods, rather than being limited to a single building type.

The exhibition spaces in Velia display pottery, statues, coins and jewellery, as well as other works of art and objects from everyday life. Educational programmes are aimed at schools, families and visitor groups; they include guided tours, interactive and immersive workshops, and other learning activities. Programme availability may change.

Marina di Ascea: beach and trails

Within the municipality of Ascea, Marina di Ascea has a 7 km-long sandy beach. Beach conditions may change. South of Marina di Ascea lies a protected Mediterranean dune where the rare sea daffodil grows; its presence may vary seasonally. Punta del Telegrafo is designated a Site of Community Importance. The designation relates to the vegetation and geological layering of the Cilento Flysch.

The Sentiero degli Innamorati is an easy, 2.1 km circular trail that follows the same route out and back and begins in Ascea. The trail can be accessed via the cliffs of Marina di Ascea at Punta del Telegrafo. Another route, “C'era una volta il mare,” runs from Velia to Punta del Telegrafo in Ascea Marina. The 2 km route takes about 1.5 hours to walk; March to September is the recommended season. The distance, route and walking time give you different points of reference for including the trails in your travel plans.
