Trentinara combines hiking trails through forests and rocky landscapes with a historic town center and festivals throughout the year. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you focus on a summit, a challenging canyon route, historic buildings or a specific festival date.

Hiking trails: summit, canyon and monastery destination

One trail leads to the summit of Monte Vesole, which stands 1,210 meters high, and passes through forests of alder, maple and beech. The Sentiero Tremonti is challenging and leads through rocky terrain and a natural canyon. Along the Solofrone River, this trail passes a mill, stone bridges, dry-stone walls, rocky outcrops and a waterfall more than 20 meters high. The waterfall’s water flow may vary by season.

The Sentiero degli Sposi leads from the Piazzetta through juniper and oak forests to a 12th-century Benedictine monastery in the neighboring municipality of Giungano. The focus differs clearly depending on your choice of hiking destination: Monte Vesole is known for its summit and alder, maple and beech forests; the Sentiero Tremonti is defined by its rocky canyon terrain and route along the Solofrone; the Sentiero degli Sposi leads to the monastery.

On the “Le due nevere” plateau in Trentinara, there is an equipped area featuring two examples of industrial archaeology.

Art and local history

The Via dell’Amore connects Trentinara’s main square with a panoramic terrace. Along the street, you can see hand-painted majolica tiles by Sergio Vecchio depicting verses from love poems. This route thus combines a distinct artistic focus with a path to the panoramic terrace.

The Borgo Antico includes the two historic entrance gates, Porta Soprana and Porta Sottana. Its cobbled streets and 18th- and 19th-century portals are associated with local master stonemasons. The Chiesa di San Nicola in Trentinara is an 11th-century Romanesque church. In terms of construction dates, the history therefore spans from the 11th century to the portals of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Festivals throughout the year

The Festa del Pane e della CiviltĂ  Contadina takes place in summer along the streets of the historic center. Bread and other typical products are sampled at the festival and freshly prepared in old wood-fired ovens made of local stone. The event has a documented history of 18 years.

Every year on October 16, the Festa Patronale di Santa Irene is celebrated with a procession through the town. The Festa della Madonna del Loreto includes a traditional candlelit procession on August 23, with hundreds of candles. The Carnevale di Trentinara draws on ancient rites associated with the cycle of nature.
