In Taurisano, a cultural and historical focus can be explored through church architecture, rural stone buildings and megalithic monuments. The various examples each have their own distinctive features: from an ornate church portal to a dome with glazed tiles and the rural trulli, locally called “truddhi”.

Church Architecture Through the Ages

The Chiesa di Maria Santissima della Strada was built between the end of the 13th century and 1320. Its portal contains an architrave depicting the Annunciation, regarded as one of the few examples of Byzantine sculpture in Apulia. An architrave is the horizontal structural element above an opening; here it also bears the image. On the church’s south side, beneath the 18th-century bell tower, a Byzantine sundial dating from the 14th century is set into the wall. The portal and sundial are therefore two distinct architectural details: one combines structural form and sculpture, while the other is a separate feature on the south side.

The Chiesa matrice della Trasfigurazione di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo tells a different story of construction. It was built in 1803 on the foundations of a demolished 16th-century church. Its dome is made of multicoloured glazed tiles produced locally using an old technique typical of Salento. In contrast to the Chiesa di Maria Santissima della Strada, this church is notable for its later construction and the distinctive design of its dome. The two churches thus differ both in their building histories and in the architectural features highlighted.

Houses and Streets in the Centre

The Casa natale di Giulio Cesare Vanini is a Baroque building in Taurisano’s historic centre. Elaborately decorated doors and windows define the building. Another point of reference is the network of intersecting streets and lanes in the centre, which runs behind the buildings. The house and the street layout offer different perspectives: the Casa draws attention to its decorative openings, while the street network describes the character of the central area.

Rural Building Types and Stone Monuments

Taurisano’s rural trulli are locally called “truddhi” and are built using dry-stone masonry. There are around forty such structures in the area, concentrated mainly in the Contrade Acquadolce, Saglietti and Silve. Their condition and accessibility may vary. Their local name and building method make the trulli a distinctive part of the rural heritage; their distribution across several contrade differs from the central street network.

At a masseria in Taurisano, there are traces of a Byzantine settlement as well as a fortified structure that probably served as a defensive and observation tower. The specchie in Taurisano are megalithic stone monuments whose origins date back thousands of years. Both subjects take us back to distant periods, but represent different forms: traces of a settlement with a probably fortified structure in one case, and megalithic stone monuments in the other.
