Torre Lapillo: Beach, Sea and Watchtower
Accommodation in Torre Lapillo
During a stay in Torre Lapillo, the long Ionian beach, the seascape and the watchtower shape your choice of destination. The main beach stretches for about four kilometres along the Ionian coast; small, hidden coves and areas with sand dunes are also part of the coastline. There are also water sports, a diving centre and an annual patron saint festival. When comparing hotels for your trip, these highlights can help you plan your time in the area around beach days, water activities, or history and festival culture.
Beach and Water Sports

Seascape and Diving Options
The coast is part of the Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area. Most of the protected area's underwater caves are in the marine area off the Torre Lapillo coast. A detailed mapping of marine habitats between Torre Lapillo and Torre Squillace identified at least ten different habitat types in the marine protected area. Young loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) have also been sighted off the coast of Torre Lapillo. Alongside its water sports, the coastal landscape can also be explored through its marine habitats and the wildlife observed there.
The Orca Diving Center offers diving courses from Open Water Diver level through to dive instructor training. The options also include speciality, technical, freediving and environmental courses, as well as excursions. Other services include guided dives, guided snorkelling trips, equipment rental and stand-up paddleboard rental. Check the availability of courses before your trip; operating arrangements may vary.
Watchtower and Festival Culture
The Torre di Torre Lapillo, also known as Torre di San Tommaso, is a recently restored watchtower. As a watchtower and signal point, it served a defensive purpose: residents inland were to be warned of approaching enemy ships. The Lapillo Tower also houses the visitor centre for the regional reserve. The tower thus combines its historical function with the location of the visitor centre.
Every August, Torre Lapillo celebrates the Feast of the Assumption as the town's patron saint festival. It features traditional light decorations, brass bands and fireworks over the seafront promenade. The exact festival dates vary from year to year. If the festival is important to your trip, check the dates for your travel year.
