Surbo: Churches, History and Festivals
Accommodation in Surbo
Surbo’s historic centre is characterised by courtyard houses and narrow streets, interspersed with spacious church forecourts. The townscape thus features a striking contrast between small-scale residential architecture and open squares. Those interested in historic town centres can get to know Surbo not only through its individual churches, but also through this sequence of spaces. The narrow streets and spacious squares create different scales within the centre.
Townscape and Historic Sites
Farmsteads lie among olive groves and rural fields around Surbo. The surrounding countryside offers a different feel from the courtyard houses and narrow streets in the centre. The Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate is accessible from Surbo. The Masseria Melcarne is also located in the Surbo area: it was an ancient fortification and was later converted into an elegant aristocratic residence. The masseria thus offers a way to trace the transformation from a fortification into a later residence.
Churches and Historical Traces
The churches in Surbo offer several specific points of reference in time. The chapel dedicated to Sant’Oronzo in the mother church was completed in 1667. The present-day building of the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo dates from 1590. The dates refer to different things: 1667 marks the chapel’s completion, while 1590 dates the present-day church building. The Church of Maria SS. di Loreto also preserves a 17th-century painting. The construction date, the chapel’s completion and a preserved painting therefore serve as separate points of reference.
Santa Maria d’Aurio is a Romanesque church and the last visible testimony to the old Casale d’Aurio, which disappeared between the 15th and 17th centuries. This period refers to the history of the Casale, not to the dating of the church. This connection makes Santa Maria d’Aurio interesting both for its architectural style and for the history of the vanished settlement.
Religious and Culinary Events
The image of the Madonna di Loreto is carried in a procession on the Tuesday after Easter. The civil and religious celebrations in honour of the town’s patron saint, Sant’Oronzo, take place in September. A municipal resolution from 2024 specifies Friday to Sunday in the second week of September as the period. The procession and the Sant’Oronzo celebrations are therefore tied to different times of the year. If the patron saint celebrations are important to your trip, check the current programme in advance.
Culinary events can also help you decide when to travel. The Sagra of “cazzateddha” takes place in Surbo in June. From 4 to 6 August 2023, the “Sagra della Piscialetta” took place, featuring a tasting of a special homemade ring-shaped pastry. The two culinary events fall in different months; the August dates specifically refer to 2023. This distinction helps you take the dates into account when planning your trip.
