Silvi: Coast, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Silvi
Silvi combines a mostly sandy coastline with a marine protected area and a rich cultural heritage. When looking for a hotel in Silvi, you might consider whether you want to focus your trip more on nature and activities by the sea, or on the history and traditions of the town.
Coast and Marine Protected Area
The coast of Silvi Marina is mostly sandy, with no breakwaters or cliffs. The Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area includes sandy Adriatic seabeds and underwater reefs as part of its protected marine landscape. The protected area stretches for seven kilometres along the coast between the municipalities of Pineto and Silvi. It is also home to the Kentish plover, a rare migratory bird that nests on the beach.
You can also get to know the landscape through its vegetation: the Pineta di Silvi Marina is home to pines, holm oaks and oaks, as well as other tree species typical of the Mediterranean region. The coast, seabed and pine forest offer different nature-related themes to consider when planning your trip, without reducing them to a single beach image.
Activities by the Sea and on Two Wheels
In Silvi Marina, you can go snorkelling in the Parco Marino del Cerrano. Outdoor activities in Silvi also include surfing and kitesurfing. If you would like to explore the area by bike, a 30-kilometre cycle path starts in Silvi. It passes through the marine protected area of Pineto and continues to Roseto. Check local route conditions before planning your ride.
The Sentiero dello Splendore may also be useful for getting between the towns: Silvi Marina is about 30 minutes away along the path, which is somewhat steep. Actual walking time may vary depending on your pace and conditions. This approximate time is therefore a planning estimate, not a fixed duration.
Historic Places and Crafts
Silvi Paese is characterised by narrow cobbled lanes, archways and hidden courtyards. “Arti e mestieri” is an event celebrating the craft traditions of Silvi Paese: many craftspeople handcraft traditional and modern objects there, creating the distinctive atmosphere of medieval workshops. The participating craftspeople may vary. If you are planning to attend the event, it is best to check the latest dates.
The Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore is the oldest church in Silvi. The Cappella della Madonna dello Splendore stands on the panoramic road that leads from the historic centre to the coast. It was built around the 1930s to a design by Marchese Giuseppe De Torres and is an important place of worship and devotion for the local community and visitors. The Torre di Cerrano is located between Silvi and Pineto on the Adriatic coast and is one of the old coastal towers of the Kingdom of Naples.
Silvi’s industrial history is also part of its cultural diversity: SAILA began in 1937 in the historic Kursaal Theatre in Silvi Marina, which was converted into a factory for processing and purchasing liquorice. The typical local dish is Brodetto di Pesce, a mixed fish soup. In this way, coastal landscapes, local history, crafts and regional food culture come together in your trip planning.
Ferragosto in Silvi
The Ferragosto tradition combines religious celebrations with life on the coast. Every year on 15 August, the statue of the Madonna is carried along the coast; this procession has taken place since 1975. It is followed by an open-air Mass in Piazza dei Pini. The Ferragosto celebrations also include a traditional midnight fireworks display on 15 August, on the beach and over the sea. The exact programme may vary.
Another part of the coastal heritage is the Torre di Cerrano, located between Silvi and Pineto. Those interested in the history of the coastal landscape will find an old coastal tower of the Kingdom of Naples there. Together with the churches, chapel and lanes of Silvi Paese, it provides a cultural itinerary with a variety of historical points of interest.
