Torre De' Passeri brings together cultural sites and historic buildings, two routes that reach or pass through the town, and the Prosciuttiamoci event. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip here, a clear reason for your visit can help: an interest in Dante and architectural history, a planned hike or a stay centred around a specific event date.

Heritage: Dante, Churches and Palace History

Castello dei Gizzi brings together institutional and museum connections to Dante: it is home to the Istituto di Ricerche su Dante, founded by Corrado Gizzi, and houses the “J. Bellonzi” Dante Museum. These two functions offer culture enthusiasts different points of connection with Dante.

The churches can also be distinguished by their respective histories. Chiesa della Madonna dell'Arco is classified as a subsidiary church and architectural heritage site. The parish church of Madonna delle Grazie was consecrated in 1815. These designations therefore refer to two distinct religious landmarks in the town.

Casa de Pompeis was built in the 18th century over a former ceramics workshop and preserves a pink room with a four-poster bed. Gioachino Murat, King of Naples, spent one night at Casa de Pompeis during a visit to Abruzzo. Its architectural history, preserved furnishings and historic visit give the palace several specific points of interest.

The tapestry “Battesimo di Cristo” is located in Torre De' Passeri and combines hemp, weaving and painting. It complements the buildings and religious landmarks with a distinctive work of art featuring an unusual combination of materials and techniques.

Views and Local History

Belvedere Tonino Renzella is a terrace overlooking the historic town centre. A municipal notice dated 6 September 2025 states that it is open to residents and tourists. Before your visit, check whether any temporary restrictions are in place.

According to local tradition, the name Torre De' Passeri comes from “Turris Passum,” meaning “tower of the crossing.” It referred to a tower on the border of the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria. The Benedictine monastery of San Clemente a Casauria lies within the municipality of Castiglione a Casauria, a few metres from the Torre De' Passeri motorway exit, on the far eastern slope of the Gran Sasso.

Routes that reach or pass through the town

The Cammino di San Tommaso reaches Torre De' Passeri from Pescosansonesco. The route first follows asphalt, then unpaved ground and finally a well-travelled farm track. This sequence helps you assess the character of the route; conditions may change, so it is advisable to check before setting out.

The Cammino della Pace passes through Torre De' Passeri on its way to San Clemente. For this route, the sequence of places provides the stated point of reference, whereas the different surfaces matter on the Cammino di San Tommaso. The two descriptions therefore answer different planning questions and should not be understood as a single route.

Prosciuttiamoci and Historic Wine Names

Prosciuttiamoci is a food and wine event featuring tastings of Prosciutto di San Clemente. An announcement from 2026 places the tastings in Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII; the location may vary at other editions. If you plan to time your trip around the event, check the date and location of the relevant edition.

The history of Montepulciano also has a local naming connection: in the agricultural registers of the Ministry of Agriculture, it was also known from 1916 as “Uva Rossa di Torre de' Passeri” or “Montepulciano di Torre de' Passeri.” These historic names add a link to viticultural history to the event’s focus on food and wine.
