Tocco Da Casauria: Hiking, Olives and Historic Sites
Accommodation in Tocco Da Casauria
Tocco Da Casauria combines mountain trails in the Maiella National Park area with olive experiences and historic buildings. The places and activities provide specific points of reference to help you make this decision.
Hiking in the Mountain Area
The mountain area of the municipality of Tocco Da Casauria is included in Maiella National Park. The mountain trails near Tocco Da Casauria are signposted and accessible; conditions may vary seasonally. On excursions along the Arolle River and its tributaries, you can observe the local wildlife and several springs, including a sulfur spring.
One specifically named trail is A8: it starts in Tocco Da Casauria and leads to Monte Rotondo. The route is accessible on foot and designated for experienced hikers (EE). The ascent has an elevation gain of 1,250 m; the trail focuses on flora. This information will help you assess the trail as a challenging hiking option and distinguish it from the general excursions along the Arolle and its tributaries. Paragliding flights take off from Fonte Luigi. If you plan to take advantage of this option, check the current conditions locally in advance.
Olive Groves and Tastings
Azienda Agricola Giardini Di Giulio offers three experiences: a guided walk through the olive groves, a guided walk with an olive oil tasting, and a walk with a tasting followed by a picnic. This lets you choose between a walk, an option with a tasting, and an experience that ends with a picnic. The olive grove walk also explains the history of the native “Toccolana” variety, as well as the characteristics of its tree, fruit and the oil produced from it. When planning, take note of the booking information and group-size limits.
Churches and Townscape
The main façade of the Church of Madonna delle Grazie features a stone portal and a radiating rose window. The church is located on Via G. D’Annunzio; check whether access is currently possible before visiting. San Domenico is considered a Renaissance church and has a Neoclassical portal dating from the late 16th century. Sant’Eustachio has a Baroque exterior and a Neoclassical interior with three naves and a large canvas depicting the saint.
The old Convento dell’Osservanza dominates the townscape. The neighboring Church of Madonna del Paradiso is richly decorated inside with Baroque paintings and sculptures. The monastery of Santa Maria del Paradiso is located on Via Osservanza. Check whether it is currently possible to enter before visiting. Together, these churches and monastic complexes offer a range of architectural impressions, from portals and rose windows to richly decorated interiors.
Castello Caracciolo
Castello Caracciolo is located in the highest part of Tocco Da Casauria, at the foot of Monte Morrone, and is strategically oriented toward the Popoli gorges. Four building wings enclose a central courtyard, and there are also four imposing square corner towers. The building’s history includes two rebuilding phases: the complex was rebuilt during the era of Frederick II. After the 1456 earthquake, the De Tortis, the lords of Tocco, rebuilt it again. Its location, architecture and history give the castle a distinctive character alongside the town’s churches.
Getting There and Planning Your Stay
Tocco Da Casauria is located on the SS5 Via Tiburtina Valeria and on the Rome–Sulmona–Pescara railway line. These road and rail connections provide two different points of reference for planning your trip. When looking for a hotel in Tocco Da Casauria, you can then decide what to focus on: the A8 trail, designated EE, the historic buildings, or the olive experience with a walk and tasting.
