Loreto Aprutino lies on a hill to the left of the Tavo River. The town’s history brings together architecture and art, collections ranging from archaeology to precinema, and the culture of olive oil. These themes offer different perspectives for planning your trip: from a stroll through the historic centre to museums, regional oil products and a route through the Tavo Valley.

Historic Centre, Architectural History and Art

A stroll through the Centro Storico takes you past noble palaces and historically significant buildings. Individual sites add specific historical context to this impression. The San Pietro Apostolo complex already existed as an abbey in 1066. Baron Casamarte had the Fontana Vecchia built in 1836–1837; in the past, it served as a public water supply for agriculture, washing clothes and watering animals. San Francesco houses an organ created by Adriano Fedri in 1745.

Santa Maria in Piano is designated a national monument and preserves a cycle of frescoes. A Last Judgment, whose artist is unknown, is particularly noteworthy. Castello Chiola brings together different historical periods: according to Nicola Vicini, its original structure dates back to the 9th century; in the 15th century, the castle was the scene of fighting between the Angevins and the Aragonese. A striking roof made of aluminium and glass turned the castle into a publicly accessible venue. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

Ceramics, Archaeology and Precinema

The Museo Acerbo Ceramiche di Castelli houses 570 pieces. The collection includes outstanding ceramics by family dynasties from Castelli (Te), created from the 15th century to the early 20th century. It therefore offers a broad view of this ceramic tradition across several centuries. The Antiquarium Casamarte displays important archaeological finds from the municipality; these finds illustrate human presence in the area since the Palaeolithic.

The Mostra permanente del Precinema offers a different way to explore cultural history. Its hands-on route presents original and reconstructed 19th-century devices that are functional and available for visitors to use. The exhibition also includes an animation film laboratory, which explores the planning and practical creation of animated short films, shadow theatre performances and workshops on precinema. Unlike the ceramic and archaeological collections, it also focuses on trying things out and working hands-on with moving images.

Olive Oil and Green Spaces

The Museo dell’Olio is housed in the ancient Castello Amorotti. Using equipment and machinery, it traces the different stages of oil production from antiquity to the present day. The Oleoteca Regionale has a different focus: it showcases products from various local oil mills in Loreto Aprutino, and visitors can taste particularly high-quality olive oils. As tasting options should be confirmed before your trip, it is best to check the current arrangements in advance.

Loreto Aprutino is one of the three towns in the so-called “Golden Triangle of Olive Oil,” which also includes Moscufo and Pianella. Together, they contribute to the production of extra virgin olive oil with the protected designation of origin Aprutino-Pescarese. The olive oil route known as “Aprutino” runs through the Tavo Valley and extensive olive groves to Loreto Aprutino. This lets you explore the history of production at the museum, regional products and the oil’s connection to the landscape as different aspects of the same theme.

The Parco botanico del Ligustro is also close to the historic centre. Its collection includes mature boxwood and cypress trees, elms, holm oaks, various palms, monumental persimmon trees and cedars. Botanical diversity and olive oil culture thus complement the town’s architectural and museum attractions. If you are looking for a hotel in Loreto Aprutino, these different interests can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.
