Tés combines windmills and crafts with hiking trails and viewpoints. This mix helps you choose how to experience the village based on your travel interests: you can focus your stay on cultural themes, outdoor activities or scenic views.

Windmills and Crafts

Alongside the windmills are a blacksmith’s workshop and its courtyard. They recall local craftsmen, wheelwrights, blacksmiths and farriers. The workshop is dedicated to blacksmithing; the broader history also includes wheelwrights and farriers.

Visitors who are interested can learn about a blacksmith’s work there. Master blacksmith Cseszneki Ferenc gives a demonstration by prior arrangement. If you plan to attend, confirm current availability in advance.

The Helt Mill in Tés is currently operational. Check its current status before your visit if you plan to make the mill a specific destination.

Hiking Trails and Viewpoints

The National Blue Trail and the Red Trail pass through Tés; check the latest route information before setting out. North of the built-up area, a wooden observation tower stands along the National Blue Trail.

Another viewpoint is Lácz, also known as Láczi-dűlő. It is at the end of Hunyadi János utca and offers a panorama across wooded, hilly and sloping terrain. The two viewpoints therefore have distinct features: the tower is connected to the hiking trail, while Lácz is associated with a named street endpoint and a landscape panorama.

More Attractions in the Broader Northern Balaton Destination

In the broader Northern Balaton destination, Tapolcai-tavasbarlang offers a different focus from Tés’s connections to crafts and hiking: boat rides are available there, along with the guided “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”) exhibition. The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town of Tapolca, which has so far been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometers.

Another geological highlight in the broader Northern Balaton destination is Hegyestű, a 337-meter-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. The inner side of a basalt volcano that was active about 8 million years ago is exposed there. At the viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panorama board. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types from Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. In the broader Northern Balaton destination, Herend complements the local blacksmithing connection with porcelain: the Herend Porcelain Museum presents a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The Herend Porcelain Manufactory Visitor Center also explains porcelain production, the associated techniques and the tradition of applied arts.
