An underground lake, volcanic highlands and a peninsula that divides Lake Balaton into two basins: Wesprim offers very different starting points for a trip. Caves, hiking trails, panoramas and historic sites each offer their own focus—from nature experiences to visits to Veszprém.

Peninsulas, Hiking Trails and Volcanic Landscapes

The Tihany Peninsula divides Lake Balaton into two basins. It became Hungary’s first nature reserve in 1952. Lake Belső-tó in Tihany is considered a paradise for waterbirds. The peninsula’s distinctive lakeside location and its birdlife are therefore both in focus.

Marked hiking trails lead from Zánka and Monoszló to Hegyestű Hill. Check the trail markings and access conditions before setting out. The Hegyestű Geological Visitor Site offers a panorama of Lake Balaton, the Tihany Peninsula, the Káli Basin and the Tapolca Basin. The view therefore takes in both the lake and several basins in the surrounding landscape.

Badacsony also combines distinctive geology with hiking trails and panoramas. The 438-metre-high volcanic cone lies in the Tapolca Basin; its geological formations are known as basalt organ pipes. A distinctive grape variety is grown on its slopes and used to make Badacsony wine. Trail conditions can change, so it is a good idea to check the latest conditions before going on a hike.

Caves and the World of Karst

At the strictly protected Tapolca Lake Cave, visitors can take a boat ride on the underground lake’s illuminated, bluish-shimmering waters. The cave was discovered more than 100 years ago. The Tapolca Lake Cave Visitor Centre also has an exhibition on the fascinating world of karst regions. A subterranean boat ride and an exhibition on karst landscapes thus offer two different ways to explore the subject of caves.

Another cave is Lóczy Cave. From the centre of Balatonfüred, it can be reached in five minutes by car or in 30 minutes on foot via green-marked hiking trails. These times are estimates and may vary. The travel options also differ in the time they require: allow more time for the walk than for the drive.

Veszprém: Castle, Cloisters and a Stairway

Veszprém Castle was built on Castle Hill in the 10th and 11th centuries. Veszprém’s historic attractions also include “Cloisters and Gardens”: the site comprises two cloisters dating from the Árpád dynasty. The two restored monuments can once again be visited via the constructed walkway.

The Rovaniemi Stairs offer a different perspective on the city’s landscape. They lead from Veszprém Valley up to Gulya Hill and are set into a steep slope covered with trees and bushes. A playground runs alongside the stairs. The route thus provides a direct link between the valley and the hill, in surroundings shaped by vegetation and the adjacent playground.

Wildlife and Activities for Children

At the African Savannah playground in Veszprém Zoo, children will find zip lines, climbing frames, bouncy castles and a safari-striped zebra plane. The listed play equipment gives an impression of the playground’s varied design. In addition, the zoo’s Zoopedagógia educational programs provide children with useful knowledge about environmental and animal protection. The playground and educational activities offer different things: movement and play on the one hand, and knowledge about the environment and animals on the other.

When planning a hotel stay, it helps to choose the focus of your trip: caves and karst, hiking trails and panoramas, or historic sites and wildlife experiences.
