When choosing where to stay, Káptalanfa offers a combination of village culture and a designated circular trail. Named local landmarks include the Millennium Memorial, the Székely Gate and the Művelődési Ház. The trail starts at the Művelődési Ház and is designated for several types of use. This lets you distinguish between local memorial sites and an activity focused on the landscape when planning your trip.

Memorial sites and community

The Millennium Memorial stands in the middle of Káptalanfa’s public park. Another named structure is the Székely Gate. It was built at the initiative of the Szent János Polgári Kör and with the support of the municipal leadership; construction took a year and a half. The gate was inaugurated in 2021. The construction period and year of inauguration place its creation in a specific timeframe. The Művelődési Ház is Káptalanfa’s community hub: it serves as an event venue, hosts exhibitions dedicated to preserving traditions and provides a meeting place for civic organizations. Memorial sites and community use thus represent distinct aspects of local culture.

Circular trail and landscape

The circular trail starts at the Művelődési Ház and is designated for hiking, cycling, horseback riding and horse-drawn carriage rides. If you are on foot, hiking is therefore one of the listed ways to use the trail; cycling, horseback riding and carriage rides are also explicitly listed. At the edge of the village, the trail passes the playground and the sports ground. It crosses the Szent-János Bridge before leaving Káptalanfa. After the circular trail crosses the bridge and leaves the village, there is a view of the Sárosfői Halastavak Nature Reserve. The nature reserve regulations designate 76.2 hectares of the reserve, including areas in Káptalanfa and Devecser, as specially protected. The route thus brings together local landmarks and a view of the protected area.

More to explore in the wider North Balaton destination

In the wider North Balaton destination, other places complement Káptalanfa’s local themes with cave geology and landscape. In Tapolca, boat trips are offered in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang; there is also a guided exhibition called “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has so far been explored for 14.6 kilometres. Here, boat trips and an exhibition are linked to an underground cave system.

Another geological highlight is Hegyestű, a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. The quarry exposes the inside of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago. At the western edge of the quarry grounds, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panoramic information board. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia. Unlike Tapolca Cave, Hegyestű draws attention to an exposed volcanic structure and the surrounding hills; both examples are part of the wider North Balaton destination.
