Csab-tócsi gives Csabrendek a specific culinary point of reference. The dish is made with sausage, onions, bacon, garlic and paprika, and served with garlic sour cream. If local dishes are among the factors you consider when choosing a destination, Csab-tócsi offers a clear point of connection: the hearty ingredients are served alongside a side in which garlic appears once again.

Additional themes in the wider destination of Northern Lake Balaton

The wider destination of Northern Lake Balaton brings together a variety of themes, from caves and volcanic landscapes to crafts and history. The following highlights belong to this destination and complement Csabrendek’s culinary point of reference with distinct regional attractions.

Cave and volcanic landscape

Boat trips are available in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang. The cave also features the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). It offers another way to explore the site: alongside the boat trip, the focus is on karst. The Tapolcai-tavasbarlang is also part of a cave system beneath the town that has so far been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometres. The activity, exhibition and geology provide different ways to understand this site within the Northern Lake Balaton destination.

Another geological highlight is Hegyestű, a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. Its inner face reveals the structure of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago. At the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can use a panoramic information board at a lookout point to identify the surrounding hills. The site also includes a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. The mountain, exposed interior of the volcano, panorama and rock specimens each provide a distinct point of interest.

Crafts and cultural history

In Herend, the Herend Porcelain Museum presents a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor centre at the Herend Porcelain Manufactory introduces visitors to porcelain production, the techniques involved and the traditions of applied art. In workshops at the Minimanufaktúra, visitors can handle porcelain clay and a brush for painting. The theme thus ranges from the history of the manufactory to a hands-on introduction to working with the material.

The Levendula Ház in Tihany offers a different focus: its interactive exhibition covers both the formation of the Tihany Peninsula and lavender cultivation. A craft workshop and an experience garden add to the activities on offer. While Herend focuses on porcelain and applied art, the Levendula Ház brings together landscape formation and lavender cultivation. Both offer different themes to consider when planning a trip.

Sümeg Castle is a relatively well-preserved medieval fortress on a bare hill that rises above its surroundings. Extensive renovation work was completed in 2022, and an interactive exhibition opened there in spring 2023. These dates add two specific recent milestones to the castle’s medieval history. Another historical point of reference is Szent Mauríciusz Monostor: it traces its origins to a monastery founded in 1018 by King Stephen I, at the suggestion of the monk Günther, in the area of present-day Bakonybél.

Exhibitions and activities

Veszprém Zoo offers year-round experiences spanning six continents and caters to visitors of all ages. The Dinosaur Park features lifelike models of dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago. Children can also take part in a real archaeological excavation there. The African Savannah Playground includes zip lines, climbing frames, bouncy castles and a safari-striped aeroplane. The attractions range from dinosaur models and excavations to play equipment.
