Beneath Tapolca lies a cave system that has so far been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometers. The Tapolcai-tavasbarlang is part of this system. Boat trips are offered there, along with a guided exhibition titled “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave landscape and karst are thus at the heart of one of the region’s distinctive natural features.

Caves, Basalt and Lake Views

HegyestƱ offers a different geological landscape: The 337-meter-high mountain lies between Zånka and Monoszló and reveals the interior of a basalt volcano that was active around 8 million years ago. At the western edge of the quarry grounds, visitors can identify the surrounding hills using a panoramic information board. HegyestƱ also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types from Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. The views, rocks and geological origins can be seen here as different aspects of the same landscape.

The volcanic mountain of Badacsony is located in Veszprém County on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, opposite the city of Fonyód. Hiking trails and panoramic views make it a destination for hikers. Its distinctive geological formations include rocks known as basalt organ pipes. Viticulture also shapes the area: special grape varieties are grown on the slopes and used to make Badacsony wine. Landscape, geology and viticulture thus appear side by side as different themes.

Crafts, Exhibitions and History

Several attractions in Herend are devoted to porcelain making. The Herend Porcelain Museum features a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor center introduces the porcelain-making process, its techniques and the traditions of applied arts. In workshops, visitors can handle porcelain clay and a brush for painting. Those interested in materials and craftsmanship will find both an exhibition and a hands-on introduction to the subject here.

SĂŒmeg Castle is a relatively well-preserved medieval fortress on a bare hill that rises above the surrounding area. Extensive renovation work was completed in 2022, and an interactive exhibition opened at the castle in spring 2023.

In BakonybĂ©l, the Pannon Csillagda offers an interactive exhibition on spaceflight and astronomy. The history of Szent MaurĂciusz Monostor is also associated with the town: it traces its origins to a monastery founded in 1018 by King Stephen I, at the suggestion of the monk GĂŒnther, in the area of present-day BakonybĂ©l. In BakonybĂ©l, a subject reaching into space meets a monastic history that stretches far back in time.

Outdoor Adventures and Winter Skiing

The Ámos-hegyi PihenƑerdƑ offers hikers a 230-hectare area with an educational trail, a lookout tower, a fitness trail and forest playgrounds. The various facilities combine experiencing nature with exercise and finding your way through the forest. They may appeal to visitors who would like to include time outdoors in their trip.

Veszprém Zoo offers year-round experiences across six continents, with activities for visitors of all ages. The Dinosaur Park features lifelike models of dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago. Children can also take part in a real archaeological excavation there. The African Savannah Playground has zip lines, climbing frames, bouncy castles and a safari-striped airplane. Each of these areas gives a visit to the zoo a different focus.

For winter sports enthusiasts, the SkiArena Vibe Park in Eplény offers another distinct attraction: 16 slopes with a total piste system measuring 7,984 meters. There are also chairlift rides above the trees, with two- and four-seat chairlifts. The Ámos-hegyi lookout point in SkiArena Vibe Park offers views of the landscape of the High Bakony. The slope length, rides above the trees and scenic views appeal to different interests without requiring the same kind of stay.
