A trip to Heves County can be shaped by a range of interests: protected grasslands, trails highlighting natural and mining history, winter sports, and wine, gastronomy and textile culture. Each theme offers its own focus.

Grasslands and nature trails

The Hevesi Füves Puszták Landscape Protection Area lies in the southern part of Heves County. It covers 16,114 hectares and was designated in 1993. Following expansions in 2005 and 2008, it reached its present extent. Its area and protected-area designation give the nature theme in Heves County a concrete framework.

The Pély-Ludas nature trail offers a closer look at grassland habitats. The habitats of the Hevesi Plain presented along the trail include saline grasslands, marshes and bodies of water, as well as scrubland, semi-natural wooded areas and forests. Their wildlife and the European roller population are also among the trail’s themes. Here, the focus is on a variety of habitat types and their wildlife, not just one type of landscape.

Trails, geology and winter sports

The 6.5-kilometre Ilona Valley nature trail along the Ilona Stream passes geological features of the Eastern Mátra Mountains and traces of former ore mining. Geology and mining history go hand in hand here: the trail introduces both the landscape’s characteristics and evidence of its former use. The stated distance gives you a concrete reference point when choosing between different travel themes, but does not indicate how long the walk will take.

A different mountain experience awaits on the section of the Országos Kéktúra in Heves County, which includes an ascent of Kékestető, Hungary’s highest point. In winter, you can also enjoy winter sports at Kékestető. This offers different options: a trail focused on geology and mining history, and a route with a summit ascent. Winter sports are explicitly a seasonal option.

Wine culture, gastronomy and textile heritage

The Szépasszony Valley is home to Eger’s largest contiguous area of wine cellars. Wine culture and its associated gastronomy are among its most important tourist attractions. Wine and food therefore offer a distinct focus alongside nature and hiking. Crispy fried trout with potatoes and pickled cucumber is recommended as a meal for a hike in the Szalajka Valley in Szilvásvárad.

The Hevesi szőttes is part of the textile heritage of Heves County. It is associated with Heves, Mátraderecske and Bodony. Together with wine culture, this craft tradition showcases a different side of regional culture from the landscape and mining themes. When making your choice, you can therefore decide whether wine and gastronomy, textile traditions, or nature and outdoor activities should shape your trip.

The trails can also be considered according to their individual focus: the Ilona Valley nature trail combines geology with former ore mining, the Pély-Ludas nature trail introduces habitats and wildlife, and the section of the Országos Kéktúra includes a summit ascent. These differences can help you narrow down the travel themes that suit you, without treating the different trails as one connected network.
