Nature around Szurdokpüspöki
On the Laposok Plateau, within the territory of Szurdokpüspöki, lies a Natura 2000 area of around 120 hectares belonging to the Mátrai Bivalyreservat. The animals roam freely there and within the municipality of Herencsény. The herd consists mainly of Hungarian domestic water buffalo and Parlagi donkeys. Both species define the reserve, whose name refers to the buffalo.
The Diósi Nature Trail is located near the destination. Its first station is around 1.5 kilometers from Szurdokpüspöki. The trail has eight stations in total and is about 4.5 kilometers long; walking it takes around three hours. The distance and duration offer two different points of reference for planning: the route and the approximate time required. Information boards at the stations introduce the natural features of Szurdokpüspöki and the Mátra, along with their flora and fauna.
Local history and tradition
According to local tradition, the first church in Szurdokpüspöki stood on Hollós-domb in the Pusztafalu-dűlő. A second church is said to have stood east of the parish after the Ottoman period. The account thus links two former church sites to different historical periods: Hollós-domb and, later, the area east of the parish.
Culture and nature in the wider destination of Neuburg
The wider destination of Neuburg also has its own cultural and natural attractions. The old village of Hollókő is a Palóc settlement in Nógrád County in northern Hungary. It is considered a deliberately preserved, living example of rural life before the 20th-century agricultural revolution. Here, the focus is on preserved rural life.
The Pásztó Museum is housed in a Baroque Cistercian monastery building that was rebuilt in 1717–1718. It has permanent and temporary exhibitions. The museum also features an open-air exhibition of a medieval glassworks and blacksmith’s workshop, considered a unique industrial heritage monument in Hungary. The history of the building and exhibitions go hand in hand, while the workshop and glassworks offer a distinct archaeological focus.
For a geological perspective, visit the Boszorkány-kő Nature Trail in the Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area. The protected area was established in 1989 and currently covers 6,928.6 hectares. The trail illustrates basalt volcanism from 2.4 to 5.2 million years ago and showcases rocks from a small fissure volcano, including sediment inclusions torn from deep underground, curved lava slabs, and basalt columns formed by weathering. The themes in Neuburg are thus clearly distinct from Szurdokpüspöki’s local natural and historical features.
