Discover Kozárd: Geology and Architectural Heritage
Accommodation in Kozárd
Kozárd brings together a protected landscape, geological features and distinctive architectural heritage. The Kelet-Cserhát, the Pogányvár quarry and buildings such as the chapel and bell tower each offer something different.
Landscape and geological features
The Kelet-Cserhát Landscape Protection Area extends into the administrative area of Kozárd and was designated a protected area in 1989. The Pogányvár quarry in Kozárd is set up as a site for presenting Natura 2000 and geology, with a particular focus on volcanology. There are opportunities to learn about Miocene volcanic features and sedimentary rocks there.
The Kozárd Formation is a marine, brackish-water deposit between Badenian volcanic rocks and Pannonian freshwater formations. It is rich in organic remains and occasionally contains redeposited silicified tree trunks. Its type exposure was uncovered in a ditch near the cemetery; the ditch runs parallel to the eastern side of the road from Kozárd to Alsótold. The geological story thus encompasses both the formation’s depositional environment and its organic remains, as well as the named exposure.
Chapel, bell tower and visitor centre
Built of wood, the Szeplőtelen Fogantatás Chapel was added to the Faluház in 2006 and is topped by a glass pyramid. Kozárd’s Neoclassical bell tower dates from 1830 and is a protected monument. The chapel and tower offer contrasting architectural features: timber construction and a glass pyramid on the one hand, Neoclassical style and protected status on the other.
The House of Natural Values (Természeti Értékek Háza) was established in the reconstructed Kohut Mansion by 2023. The tourist visitor centre was officially opened in Kozárd. Check current visiting options before your visit.
Kozárdi Kamra is also part of what the village has to offer: it opened in 2023, is located on Rákóczi út, the first street on the southern side of the village, and offers restaurant services. Check which services are currently available before visiting.
Local tours and other geological destinations
The Kozárd–Ecseg route is offered as a hiking, cycling and horse-riding tour. It is therefore not limited to hiking; if you are planning a tour, it is advisable to check the current route status in advance.
The wider destination of Neuburg also has geological attractions in its own right. The Boszorkány-kő educational trail is located in the Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area, established in 1989 and covering 6,928.6 hectares. It illustrates basalt volcanism from 2.4 to 5.2 million years ago. Geological examples include sediment inclusions torn from the depths, curved lava slabs and basalt columns formed by weathering. Another geological highlight awaits you at the Ipolytarnóc Fossils Nature Reserve: the site, protected since 1944, preserves shark teeth, fossilised trees, leaf impressions and fossilised animal tracks. They belong to a prehistoric world destroyed by a volcanic catastrophe 17 million years ago.
